The resident and fellow physicians at @PennMedicine are unionizing!! UPenn housestaff would the first residents in Pennsylvania to unionize. We are determined to not only improve patient care at UPenn, but to set standards for what residency and equity in healthcare should be.

WE DID IT!!!! Residents and fellows at @MontefioreNYC just won our union with over 80% voting YES! After weeks of captive audience meetings, 1-1s and more emails than we can count, we showed Monte that our solidarity is stronger than the fear they sowed to try and divide us.💪💜

The push to see residents as students and not employees is so that they can more easily be denied labor rights & protections to be exploited, devaluing our labor of keeping patient care running so that we accept less than we deserve. Again, why residents absolutely need unions.

I viewed my residency years as a unique opportunity and privilege to be exposed to the maximum possible number of surgeries and clinical exposures and read about them at home while someone else was ultimately responsible for my actions. I never thought of myself as an employee.
