A thread by @VinPons on our new @nberpubs working paper “Keep your Enemies Closer” (w/ Rafael Di Tella and Randy Kotti). As predicted by the Median Voter Theorem, candidates adjust their platform to get closer to their opponent.

Very excited to share our new @nberpubs paper “Keep your Enemies Closer” w/ Rafael Di Tella, Randy Kotti & @clpennec ! ⬇️⬇️ We test the key mechanism behind the Median Voter Theorem: strategic platform adjustments by politicians. A 🧵 (1/11).

A great JMP from a great JMC :) @lydia_assouad shows how strong leaders may build nations: by travelling around and encouraging their citizens’ adhesion to a common national identity.

Good news: last night’s #TrumpBidenDebate is unlikely to matter anyway. More in our @voxeu column with @VinPons and @VestalMcIntyre.

How much will tonight's TV #TrumpBidenDebate matter? Not much, if past evidence holds true. Despite the anticipation, @VinPons, @clpennec & @VestalMcIntyre argue that TV debates between candidates do not substantially impact vote choice: ow.ly/zH4c50BEkrw

Losing access to firm donations pushes candidates to talk less about local and economic issues. Effects are stronger for non-mainstream candidates who also use more polarized rhetoric in response to the ban. (5/7)
