I'm seeing a pattern here: relatively uncharismatic, left-of-center leaders elected mostly because the public grew tired of incumbent conservatives, but who ultimately failed at the basic task of governing and lasted only one term.
It's not like the Allied powers wanted it any different. That's why denazification was practically abandoned after a few years. Both the US and Soviet Union wanted a strong German state as their ally in the Cold War, they didn't care about whether former Nazis were in charge.
That's why I kind of hate Carter.
