Degenerations of democracy follow not just new media, ideological manipulations, and foreign attacks but also, crucially, erosion in the social conditions for citizen empowerment, solidarity, and equality.

Moderna and Pfizer offer lessons in how capitalism works in the real world (rather than ideology or textbooks). 1. Government subsidizes R&D and minimizes risk. 2. Government guarantees intellectual property rights. 3. Government allows firms to quadruple the price of drugs.

RIP Immanuel Wallerstein, one of the great intellectuals of our era, a social theorist who lived a deep commitment to justice, a warm human being who kept hope alive despite gloomy odds, and a good friend.

Castillian Spain has repeatedly and disastrously tried punitive repression as a way to achieve unity. Bad idea to try it again. Catalan leaders indicted over pro-independence drive via @FT

Every scholar - indeed, everyone who cares about the role of knowledge in public life - should support the University of California in its confrontation with Elsevier. Public knowledge vs private profit (at the expense of academics who create the content).

In short, far from being all about 'free markets' and rewards for taking risk, real-world capitalism is about state action to shape markets, corporate lobbying to get favorable political treatment, taxpayers bearing risk, and windfall profits at the expense of citizens.

UK academic staff are not paid well by international standards or enough to keep up with UK inflation. Cuts to retirement benefits are cuts to their compensation. This is unjust and threatens universities that have remained excellent while so much has declined. @ucu.

.@UCU's demands in their dispute are reasonable, realistic and affordable. That's why 50 MPs and Peers have written to @UCEA1 and @UniversitiesUK urging them to invest in their staff. #ucuRISING

Glad to see the vile Jonathan Yudelman has been placed on leave (unpaid I hope) by ASU after being filmed confronting woman in hijab. There is no place for such an aggressive sexist jerk on the faculty. It’s good he is not just on leave but leaving.

Kavanaugh’s extraordinarily nasty, partisan, paranoid statement is in itself a disqualification for service on the Supreme Court. #KavanaughConfirmationHearings

Utterly absurd over-reaction from a college president either too foolish and or too weak to stand up for good sense and academic integrity. A Tenured Professor Was Removed From the Classroom Over a Pro-Palestine Essay
