UK relations with Saudi Arabia & the Gulf monarchies are under the spotlight as never before. My new book, 'AngloArabia', is the only comprehensive analysis of Britain's deep ties with these states. For review copies, email [email protected] politybooks.com/bookdetail/?is…

ISIS grew out of Al Qaeda in Iraq, which grew out of the chaos caused by the 2003 invasion. 'War On Terror' approach doesn't make us safe.

The issue with racist speech is not "offence". Trust me, PoC have developed thicker skins than that The issue is that racist speech reproduces and entrenches racist thought, which sustains racist acts & racist *structures* The issue is not "offence" but *harm*. Serious harm

Britain has not "traditionally been a beacon of tolerance"! Racism was a central component of the empire that made Britain what it is. That racism continues to thrive at a structural level, e.g. the Windrush scandal You can't fight one form of racism by whitewashing the others

making any kind of political statement here. What I am saying is our democracy has traditionally been a beacon of tolerance and understanding. The chief rabbi says our democracy has been poisoned. I hope his intervention is a catharsis that heals but I fear the worst. @thetimes

Has a less qualified individual ever been put forward for one of the four great offices of state than Diane Abbott?

A familiar response when we raise the issue of British racism. Note how the instinctive concern isn't for the people of colour experiencing that racism. It's for the effect the subject being raised has on the collective self esteem of the British.

Britain's nukes aren't a prop for some trivial parlour game. Their very existence constitutes a major threat to human life, including in this country. Using them would be inherently criminal, effectively genocidal, and to smugly perform ones willingness to do so is monstrous

This is a disgraceful response from @joswinson. Not for the 1st time in this general election, she confirms she's ready to press the nuclear button. Not even a moment's hesitation about the prospect of killing millions of people. We need better than this #ITVDebate #VoteOutNukes

This of course is a classic racist trope. Even if we're born here, as @stormzy was, we're only here on the sufferance of real British people, to whom we should be grateful and never complain. And this isn't fringe stupidity. This guy is a researcher at an influential think tank

If there's one thing the British are rubbish at, it's racism. After Stormzy's dad did a runner, our welfare state helped bring him up. It may not have been perfect, but it was better than what was on offer in Ghana.

To make sense of this we need a sophisticated theorisation of how class, precarity, values and identity interact A facile "Labour lost the working class" line doesn't explain why the party's miles ahead among the age groups least likely to have a secure job or own property

Lammy was raised by a single mum working three jobs in one of the most deprived parts of London. So let's acknowledge that (a) the 'left behind' part is irrelevant (b) the words 'socially conservative and patriotic' are a flattering euphemism for something else

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not entirely convinced that the person Labour needs to reconnect with their left behind, socially conservative and patriotic heartlands is David Lammy

Britain. Where even the liberal centre can't manage a better defence of migrants than, "who else is gonna wipe my arse for me?"
