Very sad to report that one of our cardiac surgeons at the University Hospital of Wales, Mr Jitu Rathod, died from Coronavirus today. As kind a man as you could hope to meet and a tragic loss to his family and to medicine. RIP.
Jitendra Rathod was described as a skilled surgeon who was incredibly caring

I was going to post an AF ablation joke but I’d only have to redo it.

‘Obese patients have 10-fold increased risk of death from CoVid’ is running like wildfire through popular discourse. Here, from largest reliable study of CoVid (16,749 pts) is closest thing we have to the truth. Hazard Ratio for obesity is 1.37. Much weaker assoc than old age.

We have too many variables here for safe resuscitation. Solution: Put the hooves in a water bath, plug the defibrillator into the wall, turn it up to 360J and then drop the defibrillator into the water bath. Turn off at wall when signs of life.

If interventionists around the world look around, the treatment of pulmonary embolism is moving into a new era, every bit as revolutionary as the introduction of Primary PCI for MI or even DOACs. Exciting times.

The AstraZenaca vaccine appears highly effective at preventing significant illness in CoVid-19. The vaccine is being produced on a non-profit basis, bringing together an English university & UK-Swedish company in a historic charitable project. Thank you, @UniofOxford @AstraZeneca

Surely the most popular trial at a conference for years. Interventional cardiologists should stay in bed, is the conclusion. I predict 100% uptake and immediate unequivocal adoption into the guidelines. Well done team. #ACC19

So proud of my colleague Jorrit Lemkes regarding his LBCT presentatie at ACC. Results of the COACT trial show a similar survival in immediate versus delayed angiography in post cardiac arrest patients! @NielsRoyen @amsterdamumc @ACCinTouch @MartyMleon @CMichaelGibson

Interesting - inhaled aspirin effective within two mins for platelet inhibition. Wonder if this delivery mechanism could be replicated for more potent antiplatelets?

Three years of extra life anyone? Just aim for 120 instead of 140 systolic BP. Provocative analysis from the SPRINT study that once again emphasises the remarkable potency of small improvements in blood pressure control.

RADIANCE II sham controlled RCT of renal denervation released at #TCT2022 by ⁦@ajaykirtane⁩ Yet another positive trial, showing important reductions in ambulatory BP. This trial confirms RDN as a new option for treating hypertension, the number one cause of death globally.

Feels strange to me. The main weakness of the UK health service is capacity, so limiting the pace of spread should be our first priority. We are 12 days behind Italy & yet tens of thousands of people are being allowed to mix freely for sporting contests in the next few days. Why?

It’s funny, because all the arguments surgeons recently made about why EXCEL should be interpreted in favour of surgery are now the same arguments in favour of PCI in ISCHEMIA. Peri-proc MI vs spontaneous; curves crossing; landmark analysis; insufficient duration of follow-up...

🧵There seems to be so much discussion on TAVR vs SAVR at the moment. Having implanted a lot of TAVI valves, but my job not being dependent on it (!) I hope I can post….moderately…. unbiased observations. /1
