New AI paper from us this week. When my student first showed me his initial findings, I really didn’t know what to make of them. I felt that this was an interesting but curious loophole phenomenon that would shortly be closed. I was very wrong. arxiv.org/abs/2603.21687

Exercise may be the single most potent medical intervention ever known. Its benefits in prevention outstrip any known drugs: 50% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, 50% reduction in the risk of many cancers, positive effects on mental health, pulmonary health, GI

Excited to share some new work from us today on ultra-rapid genome sequencing for the diagnosis of critically ill children and adults. In critical care settings, genetic diagnosis can shorten stays, direct precision therapy, save money, and help with family planning. 1/

Atul Butte died yesterday. The world lost a giant. A big bear of a man. With a huge smile. With love for everyone. With energy that could power a room. I loved everything about Atul. I loved how he was always happy. I loved how excited he was about science and helping people.

A landmark study. Adverse drug outcomes significantly lower in those with pharmacogenomically-guided therapy. It is time to make personalized prescribing a reality. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

There was an incredible moment in clinic yesterday when I was able to tell a patient that her disease appeared to be *reversing*. This is the first time in my life I have used those words. Cardiac myosin inhibitors for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are game changing.

Incredible paper from @GoogleAI today in @Nature on their medically-tuned large language model. The implications of recent leaps in #AI capability for medicine are profound and although these first steps with MedPalm, bioGPT and others feel early... 1/n

Language models can now be trained to understand the language of life (DNA, RNA, proteins). Incredible new work showing a protein language model can predict pathogenicity of all possible (450m) missense variants in the human genome! 😮

I live in awe of my patients’ life experiences. A few years ago I was inspired to write about their journeys. I’m excited to say that many of these stories will appear in a forthcoming book, The Genome Odyssey (released February 2021). celadonbooks.com/book/the-genom…

It is exciting, humbling, and a little terrifying to launch The Genome Odyssey today. I am so grateful to my patients for sharing their lives and their stories. I am also indebted to my colleagues who shared time and ideas with me. Finally, 👉 new website buff.ly/3bAXknp

One of the most promising areas for the application of AI in medicine is scaling specialty expertise. There simply aren't enough specialist doctors to care for everyone in need. We believe AI can help. As a first step towards that goal, we worked with the amazing Google medical
