Today I m sharing another paper on unintended consequences of a UK policy which makes me cringe at how my tax money is spent all the while debating #FreeSchoolMeals "Subsidizing the spread of COVID-19: Evidence from the UK’s #EOHO scheme". ➑️ bit.ly/3ed5Slo a threadπŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ

Timely #ContactTracing does matter fighting #COVID19. In a new paper (➑️ bit.ly/394Ebuo) we study a bizarre #Excel error in England that caused 16k cases to NOT be contact traced. We econometrically can link this blunder to ~ 120k new cases & 1.5k deaths...πŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ1/N

I wish as academics we could focus on producing evidence and not waste time reformatting. I am glad this has now been quantified. But I would like to think these may reflect a lower bound on the true cost as there is an extensive margin as well. I have a whole trail of perfectly

And here it is -- communication from @ERC_Research to UK-based #ERC starting grant grantees... UK awardees will have two months time to move their grant to the EU proper, otherwise they will lose their STG. Thank you #Brexit #BrexitReality.

I want to share a new paper. Its relevant to #GE2019. The findings are quite exemplary of the misguidedness of much of economic & social policy under the #ConservativeParty. It should be a harbinger to wary voters: there is more of the same under the Tories & with #Brexit. 1/..

Look who is visiting my office while @claudiarei2312 is off to teach? Thanks @RolfatWarwick for keeping me company while I am trying to make sense of the UK's #Brexit mess. Just need to find a comfortable spot for a brief nap...

This is Barney, a veteran from the West Midlands I spoke with this morning on the train. He voted #Leave in 2016, thinking that the UK would retain single market access & "falling for the 350m NHS lie". He would vote #Remain today. He deeply fears for the Union. @RemainerNow

In this dark time good news arrived: I won an @ERC_Research starting grant. My project was picked from the reserve list. It was so unexpected, led to a stream of tears & a bunch of free hugs for colleagues & friends. Will post a bit more in future when it feels more appropriate.

In 2015, a consequential election delivered a majority for Brexit. In 2024, we can now study the economic impact of Brexit with data up to 2022. This is a thread in which I try to go full circle back to the origins of Brexit. But let me comment before on what we observe so far:

The perks of having a new office on the ground floor! Regular @RolfatWarwick visits! Thanks @claudiarei2312 for introducing me to him.
@RolfatWarwick went home for a while, but ultimately left for another campus patrol. Took the long way back to economics (via science center), waited patiently at the side door until @fetzert opened it. Then Rolfie loudly demanded his food. Now time to relax and wait for capture!
