You've seen the live performance. You've seen the slides. And maybe you've even seen the leaked rough cut that circulated online. So here it is at last: "Anonymity and Identity Online (Taylor's Version)" florianederer.github.io/ejmr.pdf

Last week Red Bull built a gigantic ski jump on a ski slope in Akureyri, Iceland. Ryōyū Kobayashi flew 291 meters and was in the air for over 10 seconds. The video is magnificent.

There's no sugar coating it: graduating into a bad job market has negative consequences that last a lifetime. This has been well-established by research. Trajectory of future earnings, as well as health outcomes, are permanently impaired.

This CIA manual for how to sabotage an organization from the inside sounds shockingly similar to how faculty meetings work.

Sports betting legalization reduces net investments of households by nearly 14% overall. $1 of sports betting reduces net investment by over $2, increases credit card debt, but has no effect on participation in lotteries or other online gambling outlets. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Academics from poorer socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to - not publish - have outstanding publication records - introduce more novel scientific concepts - less likely to receive recognition, as measured by citations, Nobel Prize nominations, and awards.

β€œNew noncompetes banned for all workers as of effective date.” The FTC just issued a complete ban on all employee non-competes. No carveouts, no limitations, no exceptions. Wow!

I spent 5 wonderful years living in the UK, but my memories have been indelibly altered by this comically brutal ad. "Paying off my law degree with tips from each delivery. Excuse me, sir, I have your tandoori!"

Today, I made the mistake of flying from Dublin to Paris via London's Heathrow Airport. This was a remarkably stupid move on my part, given that London, and by extension Heathrow, is located in the failing formerly-developed country known as "the UK". I almost paid dearly for

Give people housing and they'll have kids! Obtaining housing increases the average probability of having a child by 3.8% and the number of children by 3.2%. For 20 to 25-year-olds, the corresponding effects are 32% and 33%.

One of my favorite stats about America is that the average age of a CEO increased by 15 years in the 15 years between 2005 and 2019.

Economics Journals as Tennis Tournaments 🧡(for an extremely niche audience) Quarterly Journal of Economics = Wimbledon The oldest and most influential event, but also clubby, snobby, and elitist. To win it you must train on a very particular surface/ZIP code.
