- Total attendance for the first day of the WCWS is 21,762 (first year of upper deck seating). Total attendance for the entire World Series in 1990, when it moved to Oklahoma City, was 12,073.
- Joan Joyce’s life was an American legend that we didn’t celebrate enough. She wasn’t the product of Title IX. She was the inspiration for it. Her excellence demanded equality. Softball and women's sports will miss her. (from @D1Softball)
- Covered this sport for a lot of years. Devote a lot of my limited brain space to softball. And I still can't tell you the Most Outstanding Player for most WCWS off the top of my head. I'll be able to tell you about Odicci Alexander's 2021 World Series for a long time.
- Kelly Inouye-Perez on Rachel Garcia: "She goes down, to me, as the best two-way player. I even talked to Lisa [Fernandez] about it, ‘Lisa, you were pretty good, but Rachel has come up clutch offensively more than you ever did.’ … The highlight reel on Rachel Garcia is epic."
- Becky Sauerbrunn new President of @USWNTPlayers. Newly established title. Sauerbrunn, Kelley O'Hara, Sam Mewis re-elected to Executive Committee, O'Hara now VP-Secretary and Mewis VP-Treasurer. espn.com/soccer/united-…

- Happy Opening Day, college softball fans. Enjoy the approximately 8,000 games over the next 120 days.
- Patty Gasso: "To be honest, right now, Paige Parker is the best pitcher in OU history. ... When people recognize pitchers in this game, they recognize Ks. They don’t recognize, craftiness, guts, the will. … She is one of the best this sport has ever seen."
- Bailey Hemphill's first comment in press conference after her final game is to congratulate Mike Candrea and Lu Harris-Champer. Hard to get classier than that.
- It’s hard to build a dynasty. It’s harder still to live up to one. But the hardest trick of all is revitalizing one. And it's how Rachel Garcia became not just a UCLA legend but a softball legend. (from @D1Softball)
- No. 2 Mississippi State beats No. 7 South Carolina to remain unbeaten. I can honestly say that's the loudest crowd at a basketball game I've covered. My ears are ringing (even without cowbells).
- This is a rough day for many people in a rougher year for many more. So for now I'll just say thanks to a whole lot of folks for 22 years. I'm not out the door just yet. But holler if you're looking for someone to help share the many worthwhile stories in women's sports in 2021.
- Going to go out on a limb and guess Lisa Fernandez is the first Olympic gold medalist ejected from a World Series game.
