    Mike Candrea today: "I think [softball is] ready to burst. I just hope that we can get the NCAA to understand that and look at some of the inequities that are still involved in women’s sports. And I think they need to be changed because we have a tremendous product."

    Total attendance for the first day of the WCWS is 21,762 (first year of upper deck seating). Total attendance for the entire World Series in 1990, when it moved to Oklahoma City, was 12,073.

    Joan Joyce’s life was an American legend that we didn’t celebrate enough. She wasn’t the product of Title IX. She was the inspiration for it. Her excellence demanded equality. Softball and women's sports will miss her. (from @D1Softball)

    Covered this sport for a lot of years. Devote a lot of my limited brain space to softball. And I still can't tell you the Most Outstanding Player for most WCWS off the top of my head. I'll be able to tell you about Odicci Alexander's 2021 World Series for a long time.

    No. 2 Mississippi State beats No. 7 South Carolina to remain unbeaten. I can honestly say that's the loudest crowd at a basketball game I've covered. My ears are ringing (even without cowbells).

    This is a rough day for many people in a rougher year for many more. So for now I'll just say thanks to a whole lot of folks for 22 years. I'm not out the door just yet. But holler if you're looking for someone to help share the many worthwhile stories in women's sports in 2021.
