I'm beyond excited and thrilled to announce that I'll be starting as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Minnesota in Fall 2023!!! @UMNComputerSci @grouplens
Looking forward to this next big step... but first, time to finish up that dissertation. 😊

- Excited and honored to receive a @GoogleAI PhD Fellowship this year. As a PhD student, I sometimes find it hard to believe in my own research. Luckily, I have the most amazing advisors, mentors, and friends... really the best cheerleaders ever! This is all thanks to them.Continuing our tradition of supporting outstanding graduate students in their pursuit of research in computer science and related fields, we congratulate our 13th annual PhD Fellowship Program recipients! See the list of 2021 Fellowship recipients below: goo.gle/3zCuHA3
- I'm on the job market! I design, build, and evaluate human-AI systems with a focus on human-centered criteria such as understandability, effectiveness, & reliability. I'm interested in both industry and academic positions. Please reach out if you know of relevant opportunities!
- I am recruiting PhD students for Fall 2024 to join me (and @grouplens ) at @UMNComputerSci! If you're interested in human-centered AI, explainability, or hybrid intelligence systems, please consider applying here cse.umn.edu/cs/phd-admissi… Please RT or DM me if you know of folks!
- Walter Lasecki is a predator. Read this. Read his "apology" email. If you still don't think that this has been a part of his strategy and manipulation all along, if you can still find it in yourself to give him the benefit of the doubt, then you are a part of the problem.Replying to @genevievempI reported the event in detail to AAAI in 2017 via a video call. Unexpectedly, Walter also emailed me an apology. I sent an email confirming both my interview and his apology to AAAI. I hoped he was contrite. I moved on with my life.
- Always great to see posts about all the new awesome work accepted for publication! As a grad student, it can also be terrifying and dejecting to not have similar good news. So, in the interest of normalizing that for anybody else also feeling that way, 4/4 rejections at #cscw2019
- Are you suggesting that the previous allegations weren't serious and urgent concerns? You condemn harassment, and yet 2 known predators continue to be CSE faculty. Is their privacy more important than our safety? Climate surveys won't fix this. Do your job. Protect students.Replying to @UMichCSEWe are also concerned about the new information emerging in online conversations that we were not aware of. These new allegations raise serious and urgent concerns, and must be investigated.
- Yesterday was a very normal, average day. 🙃 Can’t believe it’s actually done! Incredibly lucky to have been advised by @eegilbert and @clifflampe! Thank you, also, to my absolutely amazing dissertation committee @iqbal_st @jennwvaughan @eytanadar @answergarden!
- Beyond excited to share our #FAccT2022 paper "Sensible AI: Re-imagining Interpretability and Explainability using Sensemaking Theory" arxiv.org/abs/2205.05057 Building on incredible recent work in this space, this paper is about *who* interpretability and XAI are intended for. 🧵
- Super excited that our #CHI2020 paper on evaluating interpretability tools using human-centric methods received an Honorable Mention! So thankful for my amazing mentors @jennwvaughan @hannawallach Rich Caruana + team at Microsoft Research! Paper here: www-personal.umich.edu/~harmank/Paper…Our paper on evaluating interpretability tools via user studies with data scientists was conditionally accepted to #CHI2020! In short: these tools are often misinterpreted by users given their seemingly clear outputs. Huge thanks to @jennwvaughan @hannawallach Rich Caruana + team
- I wanted to say something about this all day but I didn’t. Why? Because I was worried about how saying something against this decision might impact my upcoming visa renewal application. We shouldn’t have to think about these things. It should not have been a consideration.JUST IN: President Trump plans to sign an executive order extending to January a pause on issuing “green cards” to new immigrants -- and will also halt temporary work visas for skilled workers, managers and au pairs in the H-1B, H-4, H-2B, L-1 and J categories.
- Affective computing applications increasingly use emotion recognition tech. Can emotion recognition be used reliably? Should it be used at all? Our #chi2022 paper studies emotion labels from this tech and compares them to self-reported affect from people. www-personal.umich.edu/~harmank/Paper…
