Exactly 12 months ago we sailed into huge seas in our search for our fellow seafarers of the #ARASanJuan. Today we held a one minute silence to mark this anniversary and to acknowledge this morning’s news from @Armada_arg. Tomorrow we will be amongst friends in South America.
Huge seas, challenging conditions and all seafarers common foe.

We’d been at sea for a while when an enterprising Young Officer started offering haircuts onboard using his clippers. Based on the victim below, the YO has now received firm direction to concentrate solely on his taskbook!

Last night after several hours of very slow progress through the ice, at midnight and with the sun at its lowest in the sky, we reached a lovely long clear lead through the pack ice. #midnightsun #antarctica

Deeply saddened by the news that the search operation is entering a new phase. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of #ARASanJuan sailors and the @Armada_Arg at this difficult time.

Whilst at Rothera last weekend, HM2 and XOA challenged each other to perhaps the most southerly game of Warhammer 4K ever? @whitedwarf @GlasshammerUK @GWR

A rare opportunity to see the UK & Chilean ice breakers parked together in the naval port of Valparaiso. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± #almiranteviel @UKinChile @UKDefenceChile @RoyalNavy

Iceberg lookout on passage to South Orkney Islands. Radar picks up large ones, but spotting β€œgrowlers” and β€œbergy bits” in 40kts of wind relies on sailors, binoculars and lots of concentration.
