🧵 On this day, the US & UK overthrew #Iran’s democratic govt. In its place, they installed an autocrat, & equipped it w/a vicious secret police to ensure that the coup govt stayed in power. The coup set in motion a series of events that affected Iran, the region, & the world. 1

This is my 7th year teaching at MIT. As a historian of the Middle East, I get a handful of heritage students in my classes each semester. This is the first semester that I’ve had a Palestinian from #Gaza in my class. Today he shared a fact that blew me & the class away.

Humanize Iran & Iranians. Someone posted on IG that when she, as an American, visited Iran, she was welcomed with open arms and generosity. Here is a photo of a man offering her cookies while on they were traveling on a bus. If you know Iranians, you know 💯 this is super common.

He was raised in the besieged Gaza Strip, & shared that the 1st time he met a Palestinian from the West Bank was not in the West Bank but in America. The Israeli blockade prevented him from seeing his people in other parts of #Palestine. He had to wait to come here to meet them.

Beirut is not the “Paris of the Middle East.” It is the #Beirut of the Middle East—and that’s great and enough in and of itself. We don’t need to reference a Western capital to underscore Beirut’s value. It exists on its own terms and that’s plenty. #LebanonExplosion

Humanize Iran & Iranians. The Western media won’t so we must. Sarvenaz Vaezzadeh, 29, was killed when an Israeli missile struck Sohravardi, a neighborhood in Tehran, as she was walking home from work. She was no military target, nor was her neighborhood.
