I failed a course because I wasn’t available for the field trip while I was winning a gold medal for FUTA at the Nigeria University Games in 2013. The professor said he got the exemption letter from the senate, but he didn’t care because his class was ‘more important’. 🫠

This is him. Mr Thomas… you did me dirty man! You instructed me to pack a classroom full of chairs up a hill as a requirement for passing your class, after repeating to you many times that I wasn’t feeling too well. You’re wicked. And you deserve whatever you get.

…And when I had to retake the course during my extra year, the man said in order to fulfil the requirements, I had pack some chairs by hand from the old building to the new building – which was a good distance apart, and up a hill. The course was ESM 315 and it was 1 unit only.

The HOD wasn’t pleased and made all kinds of threats. I still went to Qatar for the event. That trip has opened more doors for me than my BSc.certificate ever will.

In 500level, I had an opportunity to be among the 3 Nigerian representatives at the Global Youth consultation for the World Humanitarian Summit. It coincided with my final exam, ESM502. Knowing I already had an extra year, I decided I’d ditch my final paper.

To those lecturers back then, we were just a bunch of young, dumb teenagers and 20-something’s who they could push around and make do whatever they wanted. They forgot kids grow up fast and they don’t forget. And we’re doing much better, economically. DUUH 💁🏾‍♂️

In case anyone’s wondering, I have only been to the school one time since graduating one year late in 2016. My BSc. Certificate is still somewhere in the halls of the Senate, never seen it, never laid hands on it, never needed it – I hope it stays that way. Build capacity.

Lecturers have been emboldened over time by the institution’s continued disregard for students’ welfare. Standing up to him at the time could’ve brought about a slew of secondary consequences.
