- Not to be overdramatic, but I think this debate has existential consequences. If you believe like I do that cities- with their compact green living and mix of cultures is key to saving the planet and greater tolerance- they have to be places that feel safe and welcoming. 1/A crucial divide on the left. An ex-friend said to me once living in a city means you have to accept the people around you are going to do whatever they want, and everyone has to chill. I see the opposite. Living in a city means being mindful & considerate of one’s neighbors.
