“Wonder where the fire lane is” I ponder to myself while sitting on a small balcony drinking coffee before walking 2 blocks to pickup items for breakfast.

    1) Fire departments ~can~ buy fire apparatus for narrower streets. We need to demand they do so. 2) Mandating wide streets is a life safety issue that is far more costly in dollars & lives. 3) Allowing fire marshals to dictate our built environment must (and can) be stopped.

A week or so ago my wife decided she was going to learn how to make, in her words, legit sourdough. Did a bunch of research. Bought a starter from some place that claims over 200 years of continuous use. This was her first ever batch.

I don’t think a lot of people appreciate how much of their overall lifestyle and relative certainty is backstopped by a steady, boring stability of systems they don’t understand or even realize exist.

Can we teach Europe how to install air conditioning and in return they teach us how to build public transit?

Woke up this morning to find out I had violated the Internet rules of bread by not showing the crumb. Here are slices we have left, sorry.

This is only possible because the port of Long Beach isn’t under the control of the International Longshoreman’s Association.

This isn’t China. This is Long Beach, California. Over 100 transport containers move autonomously between quayside cranes, storage yards, and rail transfer points. The vehicles can achieve a maximum speed of 13 mph, and can transport containers that are up to 70 tonnes.

Our first trip to Europe many years ago I wondered if some people might dislike us because we were American. I quickly learned that as long as the British continue to travel we will never have to worry about being at the top of any country’s most disliked tourists list.

Watched a rezoning where people in a recently built subdivision don’t want the proposed one next to them to be connected because then those people may use their sidewalks. People in near identical homes. Next to yours, which you moved into 18 months ago. From somewhere else.

We should be building versions of this on neighborhood corners across the country.

“I just wish the grandkids lived closer” she thought as she hung up the phone with her daughter, before getting to work on mobilizing the neighborhood against yet another set of greedy developer-driven zoning changes for smaller lots, reduced setbacks & weird pocket neighborhoods
