Thrilled to have this piece on the wonder, mystery, and very long history of #devbiol out in @aeonmag.
Two embryos, colourised in shades of pink, orange, and purple, against a black background. The embryos have distinguishable head, body, and tail regions.

Complain all you want, Twitter. I’m an academic and it’s the best job in the world.

Paper Reviewers: STOP asking for nickel and dime, incremental experiments that don’t advance the overall story. This kind of shit is strangling our trainees and accomplishes nothing but making you feel smart and slowing the pace of science. 1/2

Here ya go: Clinically depressed since high school. Proud I got over being "manly" and started therapy in my late 30s. Being Interim Department Chair in my 40s had only one upside: I had to start taking meds. Still do. Every day. Most recent therapy: this morning via FaceTime.

So, my sister asked me what are the five most important books to read for students in your lab, and she was irritated that i didn't have an answer at the ready. (#devbiolwriteclub Rule #4. Read with Intent.) So, here's my first draft of a list:

Ok, i'm a pretty perceptive guy, and after a year on Twitter, it seems to me that grant writing worries alot of people. I'm therefore pleased to announce my new project: #devbiolgrantclub, where i'll offer random bits of hopefully helpful advice. 1/

    Replying to @jbwallingford
Editors: When your reviewer writes “it would be interesting to know…” stop and think about how the requested experiment impacts the TRAINEE who then can’t publish until it’s done. All experiments are interesting. That doesn’t mean they are important enough to delay the paper.

So, in our recent editorial, @cleaverlab, @Lab_VPrince, and I pointed out the obvious: WE are the ones letting peer review destroy the future of academic biology. So, what can we do differently? Here's one idea in a very short 🧵 1/6 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Sorry Damon Runyon. You do not get to say "across the country" when what you mean is "Harvard gets three, Stanford gets three, Princeton gets two, but ALL public universities in the U.S. combined get five. And forty four States, collectively, get zero.

Tremendously honored and excited to be among the 2022 Guggenheim Fellows! I'll use the Fellowship to research and write about the cultural history of our attitudes toward human embryonic development. Can't wait for this new adventure. @GuggFellows

Here’s an idea. How about we acknowledge that paper reviews fall hardest on trainees and we all agree to take an extra 90 second to just be sure we aren’t insulting in the tone of our reviews?
