“The arrest of journalist Mohammad Zubair marks another low for press freedom in India, where the government has created a hostile and unsafe environment for members of the press reporting on sectarian issues.”
Israel first said it lethally targeted a car carrying journalists in Gaza because there was a terrorist in the car. Now it says that the use by a journalist of a drone made it "look like" they were terrorists. Targeting of civilians is illegal. 1/2
We are aware of the accusations currently being made by Israel against @AlJazeera journalists. Israel has a long history of smearing Palestinian journalists as terrorists without providing credible evidence, and with deadly consequences. 1/3
🚨 The Committee to Protect Journalists is aware of accusations made by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) against several journalists in Gaza accusing them of being members of militant groups. Israel has repeatedly made similar unproven claims without producing credible evidence.
Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences of speech. This is true. However, if the consequences of speaking lawfully are that you or your family face threats, assault, jail, or loss of income - whether government or mob-sanctioned - then you don't have free speech.
As a journalist, one of the first rules we were taught was never, ever to alter anyone’s quotes. It’s dishonest. And disempowering. If you don’t like the words someone uses, don’t use them. Or find your own. Don’t change theirs.

We @pressfreedom are pushing for al-Attar’s immediate evacuation. He is in a critical condition and needs urgent treatment that cannot be supplied in Gaza because of the destruction by Israel of Gazan medical facilities.
The US - a defender of press freedom - should urge this.
Al Jazeera cameraman Ali al-Attar was wounded in a bombing that targeted a police checkpoint near Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, where journalists’ tents were set up.
