Wind and solar are cranking out so much power in Texas that it looks like we are having to curtail solar during a heatwave! We need more #transmission to move that cheap power to those air-conditioners!

Driving an EV is now about 5 times cheaper per mile than driving a gasoline car.

ERCOT, the Q&A thread [so far]. Q: What is going on? A: The current weather event in Texas is beyond anything that we have experienced in modern memory. I don’t recall another time when all 254 counties in TX were under a winter storm warning. 1/

The ERCOT grid set a new record today getting almost 73% of its electricity from wind and solar! Remember when some folks said 20% would break it?

This year, the Texas electric grid is scheduled to add almost as much wind as it has in the past five years combined and almost triple its solar capacity. Yes, in 2020. My latest via @Forbes forbes.com/sites/joshuarh…

How the last ~30% of decarbonization is a lot harder than the first ~70%, but we aren’t even close to the first ~70%, so we should stop most arguing about the last ~30% and just get to work on what we can do.

The ERCOT fuel mix chart has been updated to include 2023! A few thoughts: - ERCOT is 40% carbon-free - solar looking like wind circa 2010 - coal decline offset by wind + solar - gas variability driven by gas prices - wind & solar are not displacing gas at all

Holy smokes Batteryman! There are over 100,000 MWs of energy storage projects in the ERCOT interconnection queue! That is a lot of MWs y'all!
Barchart of the current ERCOT interconnection queue showing large amounts of solar and energy storage.

ERCOT fuel mix (through May 2025) showing some interesting milestones! - The ERCOT grid ran on ~50% clean energy for the first 5 months of the year - Solar caught up with coal generation at ~13% each so far
