I think this quote from Gandalf in the Hobbit (film) captures the way the kingdom of God advances through the fruit of the Spirit: "I found it is the very small deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."

Screens are the new cigarettes, and social media is the smoke. Inhale too much and you can be afflicted with the cancer of narcissism and tribalism. To prevent this from happening, regularly breath the fresh air of wide reading habits from a broad and diverse range of sources.

In lecture prep this morning, I ran across this gem: "If our theology does not quicken the conscience and soften the heart, it actually hardens both . . . if it fails to promote humility, it inevitably feeds pride" (J. I. Packer).

The theology books that line our shelves are useless unless the truths they proclaim adorn the walls of our hearts, minds, and lives.

We can rejoice at the prospect of a just verdict regarding Roe v. Wade. But only the gospel changes hearts. We must also show love to unwed mothers and their children, even being willing to adopt the unwanted. If we have not love, then our rejoicing is empty noise.

🚨🚨 I'm excited to announce that Daniel Gumprecht and I have partnered with @RHB_Books to publish a critical edition of Edward Leigh's Body of Divinity! If you want to help, email me. This is a huge project but we're excited to put this into the hands of the church!

A good reminder for all ministers, "There is no creature more abominable under the sun than a minster who seeks himself" (Wilhelmus à Brakel, HT R. Grint). So when you see a minister's labors, who do you see? Them? Or Christ? Seems like a very relevant question these days.

If you leave the church and the faith because of sin within the church, then you really don't love the church as Christ has loved and laid down his life for her.

Sometimes Augustine could be very direct: "We do not have the leisure to linger over every puzzle that might be raised by people who have time on their hands . . . who are more ready to pose questions than they are capable of understanding the answers" (COG, XV.i).

The well-read Christian "has lived in many times and is therefore in some degree immune from the great cataract of nonsense that pours from the press and the microphone of his own age" (C. S. Lewis).
