- In a meeting that lasted less than 15 minutes this afternoon, @gannett announced mandatory furloughs at the holidays, buyouts, freezing our 401(k) match and stopping hiring. No details. Very little info on timeline. I think most of us are either speechless or swearing rn.
- It's Sunday. The first one of 2023! Time to re-share my "templates" folder with y'all so you can organize your life and stop forgetting when you need an oil change or what the name of that really good recipe was.
- Ok here's a long thread (with many links!) about Florida student athletes being asked to report their menstrual history. Many national outlets have picked this up, so I want to bring you along on the ~journey~ that has been reporting this story.
- Itโs Valentineโs Day. Which means it is the anniversary of the only time I ever witnessed a failed proposal as a server at a restaurant. Buckle up.
- If you're a @gannett employee impacted by layoffs, there is a team that's working on community aid needs (networking, food assistance, insurance needs, etc) regardless of shop union status. DM me for details.
- My newspaper editor:I get tired of reading "said." I get tired of writing "said." If the book is full of nothing but "said," it makes me feel like the writer is unimaginative, and I might have trouble finishing their story. Just saying. There are so many words out there. Use more of them.
- ok who all got the John Cena follow and why did this happen to us
- Replying to @katikokalI'm not saying this to garner sympathy. I'm saying it to show how important it is that newsrooms commit to this kind of work and how much coordination goes into reporting something that people clearly do not want reported. Support local news, y'all!
- *whispers* South Carolina never had a statewide mask mandate
- ๐งต JOBS THREAD ๐งต If your newsroom (or adjacent media company) is hiring, please reply to this tweet. Weโre collecting opportunities for an online job board for folks who were caught up in #GannettLayoffs. Include city/ state and links pls. RT to spread the word!
- A note to every journalist who hyperlinks the state statute/law/bill they're writing about: ily
- I know everyone is dunking on this, but Iโm going to add on. Last year @gannett laid off at least 600 ppl and stopped filling 400 jobs. People had to wait almost 2 months for their severance, which btw was capped at 26 years. Local this, local that. Where are the priorities?A new era in your career is coming ...Ready For It? ๐ซ @USATODAY and @Tennessean are enchanted to announce we seek an experienced, video-forward reporter to cover @taylorswift13. Sound like the job of your wildest dreams? You could be the 1. Apply here:โฏ bit.ly/3PBvuMT
- Replying to @katikokalI'm laying this out here bc this reporting (and this story blowing up) would not have been possible without buy in and valuing of local watchdog reporting by my editors. The bare minimum that the national news outlets covering this can do is to attribute + link to the @pbpost.
