Last year I had the chance to serve on the @ERC_Research Starting Grant evaluation panel. I wanted to quickly share a couple of things I learned. Maybe they are helpful to future applicants. I guess some points apply to other grants as well.

- I am German. I was always very grateful to those who fought against the Nazi's, liberated Germany, and were responsible for the prosperous country I grew up in. I am convinced my country has a special responsibility to pay back, and stand up to aggressors committing atrocities.
- I received a PhD in Economics without ever learning anything about monetary economics. Not one hour. I much regret that! There are a lot of seemingly important questions I have no good way of thinking about. Here is a very basic one for my macroeconomist friends: 1/3
- My 1st year Economics PhD program would only have two, year-long courses: 1.) Economic Theory 2.) Quantitative Methods in Economics They would look roughly like this.
- Replying to @kbburchardiIt's simply about imposing severe costs on those committing terrible crimes which come to light now. I am also reasonably certain that the costs for us will be lower than some fear. But let's not debate that more. We should shift our focus to how they can best be minimised.
- Replying to @kbburchardiI thought that was a widely shared belief. I cannot understand the hesitation of our government in holding Russia accountable. An embargo on Russian oil and gas is not about stopping the war in Ukraine, or regime change in Moscow. If we are lucky, it has that effect, too.

- True story. Needless to say I am very excited and honoured the @ERC_Research decided to support my research agenda. - Do Spanish institutions apply laws the same way to all? Given the sentence handed to "the Jordis", the judgements of international legal observers, the refusal of all courts in Europe to extradite, and now the proceedings against Mas-Colell, many have reasonable doubts.Normally I would not be posting personal developments on this website, but in this case I have a pressing concern. My dad, Spanish economist Andreu Mas-Colell, is dealing with an incredibly difficult and unjust situation. 1/
- “The Psychological Value of Employment: Evidence from a Refugee Camp” published in the AER strikes me as an outstandingly interesting paper!
