The same year I was Bat Mitzvah’d, I declined to sing a song praising Jesus that my public school chorus teacher assigned. In retaliation, other kids harassed me w images of swastikas.

(In a different town a mere 7 minutes deeper into Appalachia there is a room so aggressively air conditioned that I burned like 5000 calories jiggling my leg to stay warm in it and that too is what Alabama is like)
