- I’m gonna talk about something that I’m not supposed to talk about. I’m a 37 year old with dentures. I was dirt poor for most of my adult life, and worked jobs that didn’t offer dental care (hospitality/serving). Small problems like cavities became BIG problems.
- Replying to @medus4_cdcThere could be any number of factors that go into someone’s dental health- but most of those factors boil down to poverty. Dental care should be accessible, affordable, and available to everyone. Personal Hygiene products (not just dental care) should be covered under SNAP.
- Replying to @medus4_cdcWe should not assume people with bad teeth are on drugs- I have never even TRIED the kind of drugs that would cause tooth problems. Having bad teeth is often NOT A CHOICE. It’s not a personality defect. It has NO say in who someone is as a person.
- Replying to @medus4_cdcAt a certain point- I found myself limited to those low paying, no benefits jobs- because of my teeth. I’m GRATEFUL AF that I was eventually able to get proper dental care, even if it was too late. I can smile now. Teeth should not be “rich people bones”
- Not trying to slut shame anyone, but all of you could stand to be a little sluttier
- Replying to @medus4_cdcMy dental story has a good ending- but many don’t. Way too many people have to endure pain just to EAT- many capable people are denied jobs and many people are afraid to speak for fear of judgement. No one should be scared to smile. We should do better, as a society.
- Replying to @medus4_cdcUpdate: I’m so proud of everyone sharing their own dental stories. Thank you for helping erase the stigma. Having visible tooth issues can be SO ISOLATING, and I know how empowering it can be to realize you aren’t alone in these struggles. There are so many of us.
- Replying to @medus4_cdcI remember how @TC_Johnson actually worked that into his marriage proposal- “also, I’ve got that good dental insurance”. Gotta admit, it was a decent argument for marriage instead of living in sin- it was an added bonus to finding my perfect partner
