    20 years ago this week I handed in my MSc Dissertation, at @GlasgowCS. I built a 3D VRML model of an Egyptian tomb from its archaeological & photographic record. Today I resurrected the code and got it running again! Thank goodness I documented the code...! #VirtualReality #1990s

    I’m on the @ucu picket because: ☑️I haven’t had a pay rise since 2017 ☑️My pension has just been cut by 35% ☑️I’m paid less than the average male non-clinical Prof ☑️ If it’s that bad for a full Professor, what is the economic outlook for Early Careers folk in UK #highered?

    In 2018, soon after joining @EdinburghUni, I was given my first tour of the Old Royal Infirmary, which was beginning to be converted into @UoE_EFI. We were told we COULD NOT take any pictures. But since when have I listened to any rules? Today I revisited where I stood then...

    I miss academia. By that I mean the early 2000s Uni, pre-rankings, pre-managerialism. When you had the time to think, read, debate, discuss, write, pause, eat, exercise, and even wee when you needed. I’m not sure #USSstrike will bring it back, but we have to try.

    If you want to see how the demands on academics have changed, this was the advert for my permanent, full-time lectureship @UCL in 2003. You’d need this experience for acceptance on some PhD programs, now. These goalposts keep shifting out of reach... #UCUstrikes

    It's all about the money, money, money. Wait until folks hear that there is not one library in the entire world with a complete catalogue of their holdings, because there is not time nor resource to do so. Every institution would love a full catalogue.

    So after sorting out my job, commute, house, country, kids’ schools, work/life balance, & proximity to family, it’s time for the final frontier: health & fitness. Today I ran a 5k for the 1st time since my stay in the spinal unit in 2016.
