Our bodies are not designed to absorb and process this much violence, loss, and grief.

Spent afternoon at the Met sitting in the row behind BTS. Random impressions: The performers are not just exceptionally talented, handsome, and a global phenomenon, they also have very good posture. 💜

I got an F on my midterm in Korean History taught by a Japanese history professor at Yale. He said Asians were Math and Science majors. I was majoring in History. I wrote a novel called “Pachinko” which is now taught in Japanese history classes, as well as other disciplines.

Flex your lowest academic low score. To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end. Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.

I will never be ashamed of being hated for my race. This shame belongs to the racist. It is not my shame.

Thank you. It was written originally in English by an American. Me. I was credited as the author.

A gunman slaughtered 8 working class people at a FedEx in Indianapolis. FedEx workers surrender their phones during their shifts. 1. The victims never called their loved ones. 2. We can be asked to give up our phones but *not* our guns. 3. We limit freedoms for workers not gunmen

A Yale History professor told me to get tutoring for my “remedial English.” I’d already received Wright Prize for nonfiction & later that year, the Veech Prize for fiction, so I told him: “It’s not that I don’t know how to write; it’s that you don’t know how to read.” #Grammar

Christina Yuna Lee was a digital producer @splice. She was 35 y.o. Korean-American and a graduate of @RutgersU. She lived in a 6 story walk-up in Chinatown. On Sunday morning, a stranger followed her home and murdered her. May she find rest. May her family & friends find comfort.

A German radio presenter equating the South Korean band BTS with Covid-19, a virus which has killed 2.5M+ & devastated the lives of hundreds of millions, reflects the *age-old* anti-Asian sentiment called “yellow peril.” Anti-Asian racism is a global, historic & systemic issue.

In less than 48 hours, we had a historic Asian Oscar moment with multiple firsts in 93 years—then a mass shooting targeting 3 Asian-owned businesses. This is how terrorism works—you’re not allowed to feel safe, accepted, or valued. We can resist. Take up space. Make noise.

We lost 151 people a few hours ago in Seoul. Over 80 were injured. Thousands have been reported missing, Most of those killed or injured were under thirty years old. An estimated 100,000 people were celebrating Halloween in Itaewon. I cannot imagine the heartbreak and despair.
