Thanks to the Weber School for inviting me to give a #TEDx talk! I discuss how much people vary in their inner thought — from thinking mainly in words to thinking mostly abstractly — and the implications it has for understanding AI cognition.

Three years in the making - our big review/position piece on the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) from the cognitive science perspective. Thread below! 1/

Dissociating language and thought in large language models
Large Language Models (LLMs) have come closest among all models to date to mastering human language, yet opinions about their linguistic and cognitive capabilities remain split. Here, we evaluate...

During the first year of grad school, I asked why researchers always use linear regression to map between brains and predictor features. Today, our article discussing the use of linear vs nonlinear mappings in cogneuro is finally out at @NBDT_journal

Our goal is to understand the relationship between language and human thought. How does the language network in the brain interact with other systems to interpret meaning in the world? Can models...

Recently, Evlab has been using mixed effect models in our statistical analyses (instead of t tests or ANOVAs). This is now standard practice in other fields, eg psycholinguistics, but not so much in cogneuro. So we made a tutorial! Check it out: neuranna.github.io/mixedmodels-fm… #Rstats

A set of brain regions - distinct from the language network - responds to semantic tasks for both sentences and pictures of events! Presenting this work tonight at #SNL2022
Modality-invariant responses to event semantics identified in a set of regions in left cerebral cortex (IFG, MFG, posterior temporal and inferior parietal regions) and right cerebellum. Responses are equally strong for sentences and pictures and are significantly higher for semantic tasks than for low-level perceptual tasks. These regions respond weakly to sentence reading/nonword reading/working memory tasks and are distinct from independently localized language and multiple demand regions.
