My book, DAVOS MAN: How the Billionaires Devoured the World, is out today. It unspools story of a cosmic heist — the bottom up transfer of wealth engineered by the billionaire class, stripping governments of capacity to respond to crises like the pandemic, undermining democracy.

How the ordinary people of one Ukrainian city undermined a Russian occupation. Fantastic tale from ⁦@gettleman⁩
Oksana and Dmytro Yevminov aboard their yacht in Kherson, southern Ukraine, last month. They hid guns and sacks of grenades for resistance fighters during the Russian occupation of the city.

Sweden has captured attention as a supposed better alternative to pandemic response, not putting the economy in deep freeze. Now it is the world’s cautionary tale, suffering far greater rates of death than neighbors and with same economic damage. My story.
Sweden largely avoided imposing prohibitions. The government allowed restaurants, gyms, shops, playgrounds and most schools to remain open.

The US might have been better suited to a rescue that had government effectively nationalizing payrolls, writing paychecks to stave off mass layoffs. Far from fantasy, that’s what Denmark is doing. My analysis

The Nordic Way to Economic Rescue (Published 2020)
In the face of the pandemic, Denmark is effectively nationalizing private payrolls, in contrast to the patchwork American system.

In Sweden, robots are taking jobs and workers are fine with it, confident in the dynamism of the Nordic model. My story from Sweden.
Oskar Pals, 19, operating a loader by remote control at the New Boliden mine in Sweden. In less than 10 years, he says, “this will then be all automated, but I am not worried — there will always be other work tasks.”

    Replying to @mattyglesias
Yes, let’s transfer everyone’s retirement savings to the ownership of seven financial institutions, too, and if we need anything in our old age they’ll just lend us the money. Not having to be bothered with management is a fair trade for relinquishing all of our wealth
