Like a rug that needs straightening out. An incredible mosaic found during the construction of the Antakya Museum Hotel, Turkey. Itโ€™s the largest single expanse of mosaic in the world covering 1050 sq. metres Photograph by @CemalEmden/@EmreArolatArch Via instagram.com/p/BxF4bqcl3Y1/โ€ฆ

Extraordinary frescoes of animals revealed on the side of the bar counter in #Pompeii Region V that was partially excavated in 2019. The dog straining at the leash is incredible as the detail of the henโ€™s plumage. Two ducks await to be cooked. Photos: Luigi Spina | @pompeii_sites

In true Pompeian style thereโ€™s a crude graffito scratched in the plaster possibly referring to the owner of the bar, a Greek called Nicia. It reads โ€œNicia cineade cavatoreโ€ that translates as โ€œNicia shameless shitterโ€. Got to love bar banter. Photo: Luigi Spina | @pompeii_sites

A staggeringly glorious day to be looking over Naples and Vesuvius.
The two-humped outline of Vesuvius is on the skyline while the city of Naples huddles along its foothills. The Bay opens out the right. And all framed by an arch with stone benches in the foreground

The Roman villa at Positano - another casualty of the AD 79 eruption and buried under metres of ash and pyroclastic material. That green background colour is a sheer delight and the ghostly white stucco figures and animals added to the fresco are in relief and pop out at you.

Really fascinating โ€œpre-tesseraeโ€ stage in the process of making a Roman #mosaic. Guidelines for the design scored into a preparation surface - some lines are shaded to distinguish between contrasting coloured bands. On display in the Quisisana Libero Dโ€™Orsi Museum. #MosaicMonday

Horrific details of a victim of the AD 79 eruption in #Pompeii emerge in Region V excavations. A 35 yr old trying to escape but probably hampered by a diseased leg then gets struck by falling masonry that decapitates them. Images & info: napoli.repubblica.it/cronaca/2018/0โ€ฆ via @pompeii_sites

I still marvel at Roman engineering. Here, a lead water reservoir with a beaded decoration is fed by a single pipe and then two pipes, that can be adjusted using the valves, supply water to different parts of the Villa Arianna, #Stabiae. They thought of everything.

Incredible! For once, โ€˜mint conditionโ€™ is actually a fair description. These additional photographs, courtesy of @_MiBAC, show the amazing state of preservation of these 5th century coins. What a find.
