Dear intern, It’s ok. I dropped a prod database when I was a senior engineer. These things happen more often than you might think. Building good systems is about having resilience against human mistakes. Because we, humans, always make mistakes.

Burnout happens when there is no progress. Burnout also happens when you have no visibility into how dots will connect in the future. Burnout is about not being able to close the loop after putting a ton of effort and not seeing enough results.

I'm hearing from multiple personal sources that key engineers who survived the layoffs are resigning. These key engineers are mostly old timers and probably have a lot of financial freedom to do whatever they desire to do.
Multiple sources and Twitter Blind chats now saying that the company has begun to reach out to some people it laid off yesterday asking them to come back. Whoops! 🥴

Once I met someone who confessed that they set a crone job committing 2-7 empty changes to a private repo not to deal with this nonsense 😂

I'm working from home with my partner who is a C++ developer. He takes a break at every 15 mins to rant about some C++ feature.

When I was working at Google 10 years ago, 3 engineers would get together to solve a very hard problem in 6 months without distraction from anyone, then get the sponsorship of 1-2 people from leadership to turn it a real thing and slowly grow the team.

Next week, I'm joining GitHub as a Distinguished Engineer. As a long time GitHub user, it's going to be a true privilege to join the team to broadly work on our products, infrastructure and engineering culture.

In my early 20s, I thought sleeping only for four hours a day and working 80+ hours a week was fine. I have two chronic diseases and I rely on meds now. Don’t compromise your sleep and health for a job even if you’re the founder.

Soon, I’m joining AWS as a Principal Engineer to work on AWS’s observability efforts. I’m excited to come back to this space and work with some of my favorite people again. I’ll also once again be active on open source and open standards efforts in this domain.
