4 years of undergrad. 🧑🏼‍🎓 4 years of medical school. 👩🏼‍⚕️ 7 years of neurosurgery residency. 🧠 This coal miner’s daughter from a holler in Kentucky is officially a neurosurgeon, y’all. 🍾🥂 Celebrated in true Kentuckian fashion by sharing some Pappy with some of the people I love.

I became a mom during my neurosurgery residency. Many folks told me before med school, it would be too hard to have a family as a #womaninmedicine. In med school, I was told by many that it would be impossible to have a family as a #womaninneurosurgery. I LOVE being a mom!! 💗

I became a mom in med school, & many people told me I shouldn't do it. To anyone being told they have to put their parenting plans on hold until training is done, don't listen. This narrative is not helpful. We need more representation of parents in training & more support.

I walked into a patient’s room today, and the patient’s mom asked, “Are you the surgeon who braids hair?” “Yes! Yes I am!” 😊 “We heard all about you! We are so excited!!” 🥹🥹🥹 Another little patient of mine jumped out of their bed and came straight to me to give (1/3)

Chief neurosurgery resident mom achievement! Made it to my daughter’s zoom parent-teacher conference between managing OR schedules, grand rounds, & preparing for my next case. I may not always be physically present, but I’m trying my best to be the best mom & surgeon I can be.❤️

After seeing comments from a physician (who clearly lacks empathy) regarding the tragic loss of a resident who took their own life, I’m here to remind our profession that we absolutely do not and should not continue to pass down the emotional trauma we experienced (1/6)

Can we normalize women having children during residency? Making jokes about freezing eggs is frankly not funny. That’s an additional procedure with risks, time commitments, and costs that women are subjected to unlike our male counterparts who don’t have to worry as much (1/3)

Life feels so surreal at times. Somehow this little girl, a coal miner’s daughter from a holler in KY, went from catching crawdads in the creek & lightnin’ bugs in the night to operating on brains & spines while watching my own daughter discover the magic of life. Gratitude 🩷

I am so excited to officially announce that I will be returning home to KY in August 2024 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Kentucky! I can’t wait to be UK’s pediatric neurosurgeon & serve the children & families of my home state! (1/2)
