A good omen if ever there was one. Wood anemone is named after the Anemoi, the Greek gods of wind. Zephyros, the god of the west wind, was said to be the herald of spring, bringing a gentle, warm wind following the cold, northerly winds of Boreas. 📷 Nigel Symington

The sheen of the sun as it rises over the horizon: every tenant in the Downs, from rabbit to rambler, can share in this borrowed beauty. #SouthDowns #Sunrise #GoodMorning

Guess who's waking up and finally joining the party? We always get a bit giddy when folks report seeing their first adder of the season. Normally very shy, give them a wide berth and allow them to enjoy the sun. Also good to keep dogs under close control if out walking.

An omen of the season to come. When lesser celandine starts appearing along damp woodland paths, spring isn't too far behind. 📷 Charlie Hellewell #SouthDowns #Wildflowers #SpringIsComing

A very good omen for Small Blue butterflies. Kidney Vetch is the sole foodplant for the larvae of Small Blues - the UK's smallest butterfly. Seeing this flower in abundance on the chalk grassland bodes well for the species.
