Sooooooo predictable: After a pair of wins in Denver last week vs non-altitude teams, BYU comes back to sea level and back to Earth, getting run out of the gym by Alabama 109-88 in Newark, NJ. BYU is now 19-3 above 4000 feet this season ... and 7-7 below.

There are hundreds of juco and small college coaches who grind away in anonymity, miles from the Final Four, waiting for a break that may never come. They're all rooting for Texas Tech's Chris Beard, who carries the torch for them.

SDSU sent a letter to the Mountain West before the June 30 deadline saying it is staying in the conference. One problem: The Mountain West says it already left and now owes an exit fee estimated at $17 million. sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/…

Surreal scene at Thomas & Mack Center. SDSU players standing around during pre-game warmups in disbelief as word of Kobe Bryant's death spreads. For many players of this generation, he was their boyhood hero.

Here's another stat for the "altitude isn't a thing" crowd: In the last 20 years, the only two times BYU reached the Sweet 16 was when it played its first two games at altitude in Denver. Since 2005, they are 4-0 above 4,000 feet in the NCAA Tournament ... and 2-11 below.

An incredible college career comes to an end for Lamont Butler. All you need to know: His teams went to the NCAA Tournament in all five seasons and he played in 14 tournament games, three Sweet 16s and a Final Four.

When you look up the definition of a soldier.. Lamont Butler’s face will be beside it. His college career should’ve been over weeks ago.
