Back when I gave out a bunch of Deadlock keys, I just told people to give me profile awards which accrued over 100,000 points for me, which was about $3,000 worth of Steam Points on my profile.

Yes, but they give you back the deposit after your game makes $1,000 in sales through Steam. It's just a security deposit to prevent a lot of bloatware to going on the market (however I am making a free game so idk how I'll recoup this).
