it's unsurprising but pretty incredible that almost everyone has completely blocked out the "millions and millions of people have permanently died and are still dying" consequence of the pandemic, like in a very concrete sense people cannot metabolize that ongoing loss as real

More comfortable?? You do realize that kind of language is what men use to pressure women to have sex without condoms, right? IUD insertion is a notoriously super painful procedure, and IUDs don't protect against STIs at all. This is so bizarre to see from you.

people experiencing a genocide showing solidarity with disabled people meanwhile self-identified leftists spend their free time mocking people with Long COVID and throw a fit if you ask them to put on a mask
A screenshot from Instagram of the comments section of a post from The Sick Times account. One user writes: "Here is Gaza, we understand what it means to struggle with health crises and limited resources. We stand with all those suffering from Long COVID." Another user replies: "What a beautiful thing to say. Thank you for your solidarity. It is reciprocated" with a heart emoji.

Today in Vox, inspired by Zeynep's NYT editorial earlier this week, I wrote about why we badly need a Covid reckoning and are never, ever going to get one:

This convo has been had so many times. Yes, the state is failing all of us. Are you as individual witnessing the harm that failure is causing going to a) exacerbate the harm or b) mitigate the harm? The ppl attacking the state are the same ppl you're criticizing. It's both and.

people saying "so glad everyone's ok" a month after the COVID superspreader is like saying "so glad that smoking habit I started a month ago didn't give me cancer" like PLEASE learn how this disease works lmao

COVID-conscious people don't think that they've abandoned science; they’ve come to think that science has abandoned them. @danengber reports: theatlantic.com/health/archive…

I'm glad you had a good and completely pain-free experience. The vast majority of people who get IUDs do not. In the pursuit of whatever version of feminism you guys think you're doing you're forgetting the widespread material conditions that women live under.

I know "permanently died" seems redundant, but I mean it. Pandemic denial prevents ppl from grieving the whole spectrum of its consequences, both individually and collectively, including mass death. We don't have those ppl here to contribute to ongoing conversations about risk.

there's dozens of people trying to jump me for this opinion as if "but it doesn't feel as good" isn't a classic line that gets used to coerce women into unprotected sex all the time and everyone knows it lol

And that's a huge part of what mass-scale grief rituals do—remind us of those perspectives, make ppl actively think about those who haven't survived. On a small scale, COVID has been a taboo cause of death from the start, preventing those convos from happening in the 1st place.

Which seems obvious, but sometimes I imagine what it would be like if they could weigh in. What kind of world would we be in now if everyone knew they were accountable in their daily choices to those who this viruses has killed, if they could hear those perspectives right now?
