00:00 - Tip for character design students: Learn to draw with volume. Start with simple objects like oranges, bottles, cans, boxes..etc. Start with observational drawing.. draw from different angles.. once you start "seeing" the object in your mind move to drawing it from memory..
- This shows that doing accurate turnarounds are just as much about showing consistent forms as it is about making aesthetic choices on every angle*perspective

- Interesting to note that for Miyazaki, storyboarding, art, and character design happen at the same time.. also interesting to see that the first step isn't a script but imageboards.. something that the visdev department used to do more on the hand-drawn animated films at Disney*
- Best advice for students in animation: learn how to draw- more then painting, sculpting, design, story, animating ..etc invest in observation and construction drawing- Everything will be accessible once you have foundation drawing skills
- TIP for design students: Learn drawing as deeply as possible while you have the time. Learn the craft of quality classical hand drawn animation. It's not your "style" that is stopping most student's growth but it's basic drawing foundations like perspective and anatomy!
- Congratulations to all the animation artists that worked through a pandemic to make those movies while parenting young children- you all deserve Oscars and more*****
- Observational and volumetric drawing is what was missing in 95% of the portfolios I reviewed while I was at Disney Feature up till 2019. 95% of my opportunity mentoring newer artists was solely focused on building their drawing skills. Drawing is so important!
- I wish there was less “watch me flex my generic anime fight scenes” and more animation like “here’s a scene where it just stopped raining and this girl is trying out her new bicycle.. irrespective that the road is crumbly and slippery- yet she can’t wait to ride out her joy”
