New post: "The Mythical Agent-Month" With coding agents, we are writing code faster than ever. But hands on keyboards was never the bottleneck, a lesson from Fred Brooks's 1975 classic that we keep painfully relearning. Will it be different now, or will we run into the same

I dislike open offices, 9-5 schedules, and synchronous comms (eg Slack). I do my best work in private, on my own schedule, and without concern about interruptions. It's no surprise I love hacking on airplanes! Glad others feel the same way
Generally, nobody at Basecamp really knows where anyone else is at any given moment. Are they working? Dunno. Are they at lunch? Dunno. Are they picking up their kid from school? Dunno. Don’t care. Escape from the Presence Prison —> m.signalvnoise.com/the-presence-p…

I'm happy about Python's growth but it's a bummer to see articles fail to explain why the language experienced a major growth inflection point starting in 2012-2013. It wasn't only because Python was more readable than Perl

Santa brought twins! Thanks to @nvidia for donating two DGX workstations (each 20-core Xeon, 256GB RAM, 4x Tesla V100) to Ursa Labs for @ApacheArrow development. 2019 is going to be an exciting year in Arrow-land

Rudely interrupted today by some dude in a Blue Bottle in SF to tell me that working on data science tools is a waste of time because feature engineering and ML is already "completely automated" and the tools are "good enough" #wat

I shudder to think about the role we've played in making this kind of stuff easier for people to do
