I am around two-thirds of the way through Human Extinction, and have been completely astonished by it. It’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive pieces of scholarship I’ve come across in recent years: vital, compelling, readable, and sufficiently terrifying without being indulgently gruesome. I can’t remember the last time an academic text so thoroughly permeated my broader thinking (the thesis that permanent human extinction is a comparatively modern idea, rather than merely a mytheme ubiquitous across cultures and time periods, has alone drastically reoriented my approach to a number of subjects).

Boy, are we fucked. Fascism, genocide, climate change, deepfakes, social media, disinformation, fake news, PFAS and other chemicals flooding our environment, the decline of reading, the profound threats to free speech, the loss of a shared reality, etc. So fucked.

This is such a good quote from Dr. Becker. Worth reading in full:

One astrophysicist talks to Rolling Stone about the messianic, sci-fi fantasies of the tech oligarchs: "Musk talks about Mars as a lifeboat for humanity, which is among the very stupidest things that someone could say. There are so many reasons why it’s such a bad idea, and this

We are not sleepwalking into civilizational collapse. We are wide awake. I feel utterly heartbroken for everyone 20, or 40, years younger than me. I don’t think that most people have any clue how bad this is going to be. 💔

This is Sam Altman's sister. Her tweets about sexual, physical, emotional, etc. abuse are incredibly hard to read. Seems that no one in the media is that interested in covering this story because they're afraid of losing access to OpenAI if they write something critical of Sam.👇

I’m not four years old with a 13 year old “brother” climbing into my bed non-consensually anymore. (You’re welcome for helping you figure out your sexuality.) I’ve finally accepted that you’ve always been and always will be more scared of me than I’ve been of you.

Holy hell, this is an absolutely incredible statement from the Lemkin Institute (@LemkinInstitute). "Lemkin" refers to "Raphael Lemkin," the individual who coined the word "genocide." (Continued below.)

Four students at Case Western Reserve University -- my university -- were told that their visas had been revoked and that they will need to leave the country, while the semester is still going. Now, turns out, they don't! What a complete sh*tshow.

When DHS erased students’ database records, universities said they had to leave. An ICE court filing says the students still had status.

I am absolutely, 100% sympathetic with this person. Working full-time, 7 days a week is NOT NORMAL. I mean, it is in our capitalist milieu, but capitalism is NOT NORMAL. What is the POINT OF LIFE if all one does is work work work work to wake up the next day and work work work??

No, it won't. Our planet was *literally more habitable* after a giant asteroid struck it 66 million years ago than Mars is today. The top of Mount Everest in the middle of winter is more hospitable to life than Mars is on its nicest days. This is just stupidity:

These guys are destroying democracy and are disproportionately contributing to the climate catastrophe (by a long shot). And then they turn around and build bunkers to survive the collapse of civilization that they played a crucial role in catalyzing.

I sent a paper of mine to an Oxford philosophy prof earlier this year, and he *loved it*. Told me I should submit it without edits, and that he'd be citing it in future papers of his. So, I submitted to an ethics journal -- desk rejection. I submitted it to another journal, and

Silicon Valley is run by people who genuinely think the world as we know it is going to end in the next few decades. Many also WANT this to happen: they WANT the biological world to be replaced by a new digital world. They WANT "posthumans" to take the place of humans. A 🧵:
