I spent basically my whole life learning everything I could about computers, have extensive knowledge in building cloud infrastructure (cloud provider side; lots of Kubernetes, Ceph, I know quite some stuff about networking, ..) and in my spare time also dabbled in osdev, microcontroller-based electronics and firmware for them (one of those devices is in constant control of my bearded dragons terrariums lights for 3 years or so now).

I really do know a lot of things and my very logical approach makes it easy for me to pick up new things. Completely away from IT/electronics, I have some CAD skills (FreeCAD, OpenSCAD), can do basic welding (MIG, TIG - tho I need more practice), know how to dis-/assemble complex things ...

Soo ... #GetFediHired please? I need something away from AI, something where my skills and actual knowledge are valued and I can maybe even help people. I just need enough pay to survive here in Finland.

When I was young, one of my favorite games was Age of Empires, which was released for Windows. I haven't used Windows for a long time, but my love for the game has remained. There is a Linux port of the game called OpenAge. I began porting this game to OpenBSD in 2014; I finished the port last week, and all the patches for OpenBSD have been accepted upstream. Hooray!

I'll sent patches to ports@ soon.

Lots of good feedback, thanks everyone.

Today I finally got a couple of hours of light practice with it, and so far I quite like it. It's going to take some time to get used to, and I didn't get to try belaying a lead climber yet, so lots of practice needed, still.

Probably the last man who knew how it worked had been tortured to death years before. Or as soon as it was installed. Killing the creator was a traditional method of patent protection.

Anybody interested in a free ride in a helicopter, flight for 4 people?!

I'm still looking for 2 more people to join us. We leave early Saturday (October 24th) morning from Manchester and will fly to Poole in Dorset where we will have breakfast and then on a yacht for lunch.

Then we’ll have a flight to Jersey and return to Poole for dinner, then fly back home.

If interested please DM me. Preferably someone with a helicopter and yacht, otherwise we can't go.

* Why did they make you run laps during sports classes? Going by car is much faster.
* Why did they make you write long essays in school if a machine can write you a million essays if you ask it to?
* Why would you go to a gym if a robot could be lifting much heavier weights than you can?
* Why did you decide to go university if an LLM will give you an answer about any topic in the world? Why are you here?

I used to enjoy open source software -- the quality, the communities, and the collaboration between strangers -- and for a time I even spent a significant part of my free time contributing to it by writing code, documentation, etc.

Looking around now it feels like everyone is deluding themselves with so-called responsible use of AI with long-winded policies that somehow are supposed to paper over the questions of copyright, licenses, and ethics.

Slowly but surely the King Midas of shit touches one OSS project after another.

We've had so many flamewars on mailing lists arguing about which OSS license was, for lack of a better term, "best", or the most free, or permitted other people to buy you beer.

Now someone commits an AGENT.md wherein they write that developers own the code they commit, but that's not how laws work. They are more focused on assigning blame than protecting ideals that we spent 20-30-40 years debating and refining.

"It's okay, because we require our developers to" .. your requirements have no legal value, and unless you do actual work to uphold them, they have no consequences, and even then you're still ignoring that the P in slop stands for "planet boiling".

We do have bugs but our bugs were hand-crafted by humans.

"Every mighty pirate needs a ship, a sword, and a suspiciously large collection of objects that might come in handy later.

I started with LEGO bricks. Things got slightly out of hand.

Welcome to my tribute to the first 2 chapters of the epic saga of Monkey Island: a double-sided build packed with familiar faces, strange discoveries, and absolutely no guarantee that anything can be solved by using common sense."

Relentless AI scrapers pushed DNA Lounge's web hosting bill from $800 to $3,500/month.

That is a $32,000/year cost shift caused entirely by companies training models on their content without permission. AI companies are externalizing their massive training costs onto independent web operators, effectively taxing the independent web to build their proprietary models. 📉

Hey #FreeBSD folks, NetBSD hit more than double their funding target after adopting a strong no-LLMs policy. Something to think about while you draft yours, perhaps?

The stairs in the foyer of Rådhuset is my favourite stairs. (This is the Fediverse, so I assume everyone has a favourite stairs.) Aside from the design, I like the way it frames Aarhus City Hall’s foundation stone.

I thought I knew it well, but only learnt this week that there’s a time capsule buried beneath it. A lead pipe with documents, coins and newspapers of the day. Laid in 1938. Little knowing that Nazis would be occupying the city before construction was finished.
