Pinned post

Hi all,

I've had a few instances of people contacting me about the site of xwinman.org

When I mirrored it, I did say as just that -- a mirror of the information, which is found here:

xteddy.org/xwinman/

I've no intention of letting that go.

But, it seems there's a few people who are disputing the legality of these pages. and/or, wishing to clone the content for themselves and "modernise the CSS".

This seems odd to me. and should not happen.

To this end, I've added the mirrored files of xwinman.org here:

codeberg.org/thomasadam/xwinma

... and want anyone to know that these are the official files from the original mirror.

My wife and.I bought a new painting.

It's a wildlife scenery depicting the Uffington white horse (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uffingto) with local wildlife: hare, hedgehog, mouse, barn owl, fox.

You can see sunflowers, foxgloves, etc.

It's just a nice, colourful painting, by a local artist.

I bet being an artist is hard work and not a lot of money happens because of it.

We bought the original painting of this, rather than a print.

Worth every penny.

There's no in the painting, but you can't have everything, right? ;)

And the wife is happy. ;)

Hello everyone,

I've released the -portable version of got-0.130, in-line with upstream got.

See their changelog for what's included:

gameoftrees.org/releases/chang

For portable-specific information, see:

gameoftrees.org/portable.html

Any questions, shout!

ALL HARDWARE IS NOW GONE, THANKS EVERYONE!

I'm giving away all my Sparc hardware:

2x SparcStation 10s (ONE IS GONE, SEE REPLY)
1x Lunchbox form-factor 32-bit SparcStation, maybe an LX? Basically a single processor SS10 in a lunchbox form factor with a microSparc CPU
1x Ultra 1e that doesn't boot with a graphics card
1x Ultra 5 with no cards or any other accessories

And a bunch of other random related stuff including some HDDs for the Ultra1e, several sBus graphics cards, an sBus ESP wide SCSI card, some random SCSI cabling and adapters, and an mBus HyperSparc CPU.

All of this, except the Ultra 1e booted when parked, ~15 years ago.

This is free to anyone who can either:
- collect it from the inner west of Melbourne
- or lives anywhere within ~15km of a line between the Melbourne and Geelong CBDs that is accessible by car (if you're not sure, ask)

I'm not going to split this up, so if you don't want all of this, please give away or recycle the rest.

I'll update this post when it's gone.

(Please boost for reach, I'd really like to give all of this away instead of recycling it)

compatible version control system version 0.130 has been released.

This version adds server-side support for SHA256 repositories and defaults to SHA256 for newly created repositories.

We will be upgrading our @gothub hosting service to this version soon.

Via en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locate_( and archive.org/details/login-feb8, here's the thoroughly sequential 'locate' algorithm from 1983. Later versions of the code are less elegant (I dug some up) even before you take vectorization etc into account.

Wow. One of the #FVWM core devs, @thomasadam is on the #fediverse and....he's a fan of XTeddy too! As many of you know, teddy bears are my thing. Asbjornsen, means "Son of the Bear God" which is why I choose it, and bears have always been a thing with me. And I have #PTSD, and in High School, I had my ThinkPad 380ED loaded with RedHat and FVWM and XTeddy. So classic. FVWM is still so good. #linux

I had this idea for a while to create some sort of container configuration editor for CoW such that you could define a layout visually, and have that something represented in CoW.

Well, now I sort of do. See screenshot attached.

It's written in for quick prototyping, and works through CoW's existing IPC mechanism. Hence. this editor can export the relevant config for use elsewhere.

I'm still working on it, but it's a lot of fun...

River 0.5.0 is released!

Now there's nothing stopping you from writing a river window manager for your mainline Linux phone!

In praise of lighthouses.

As a kid, I grew up on the south coast of the UK, and moved around a lot;

Many of these places had a lighthouse and at the time I didn't really think much about them.

Especially lighthouse in Dorset, UK.

To cut a long story short, some excellent soul has produced this website:

mapped.earth/lighthouses/world

Which maps, in real time, lighthouses across the planet.

Utterly amazing!

I know a lot about lighthouses in the UK but don't really talk about it -- so if anyone's interested to chat, let me know. Xxx

Let the characteristic guide you!!

@thomasadam @lgsl Ah! I can't see the bsd.network link, it asks for a login.

Anvil would make a great print test cow in place of a dogcow.

Mooo!

@thomasadam Very impressive! When it gets to a state that can be used by others, I'd love to give it a try (especially with that CDE Front Panel loadout!)

For the folks unacquainted with the @netbsd toaster (it was notably more red than pink), it's quite the piece of NetBSD lore 😆

@thomasadam gotta say I super love that the cow site includes functional CDE window controls. Takes me back! 💜

I've been making steady improvements to cowbuttons and have come up with a fairly accurate approximation of CDE's panel.

See screenshot attached.

What is CoW? It's a window manager for wayland using River as the compositor.

Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?

We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!

Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

Thanks to @thomasadam@bsd.network I now have #CoW running on #NetBSD under #RiverWM !
It's just a basic config whilst I iron out stuff on my test NetBSD setup. More to come!

Been customizing #FVWM on #OpenBSD the past couple days, and I'm quite happy with what I see!

As for what I'm doing? Well, the traditional #Motif decorations and the default Windows 3.0 (not 3.1!) color scheme looks quite beautiful, I must say. :)

I had been wanting to get more into Motif development. The toolkit definitely has charm. I've always preferred those 90s 3D window decorations.
