Zarya is a 44 track score for a Slavic folk village in a fantasy game: the izba hearth at dawn, the green and the well, the market square and the haggle, the smithy and the water mill, the wooden church and its bells, the elder's hall, the river at dusk, the birch road and the forest at night, the rye fields and the harvest, the ring dance, the wedding, the midsummer bonfire and the winter carol, the wake, the night watch, and the cues a game fires all day.

One song, every room. Every track states the same 5 note tune, the song the village knows, in its own shape, and every other theme on the record is cut from it. Counted by the harness in the finished MIDI: all 44 tracks state it. This is the grammar of our album Hearthmoot, carried east into a new idiom.

The raised fourth, every part. Every track is in one of two modes that raise the fourth. 27 are in Lydian (1, 2, 3, sharp 4, 5, 6, 7) for the village in daylight; 17 are in the mode scale books call Ukrainian Dorian (1, 2, flat 3, sharp 4, 5, 6, flat 7) for the lanes at night, the smithy, the church, the river at dusk, the wake and the watch. Checked on the shipped MIDI: no part of any track, not the bass, not the chords, not the drone, plays the natural fourth (0 found), every lead plays the raised fourth (602 times across the album), and the Ukrainian Dorian leads cross its augmented second 154 times. Run the same check over the other 29 albums in this studio's catalogue, 1169 tracks: 63 tracks pass it and no album passes it on every track.

A drone under every first statement. Every one of the 38 full pieces opens over a drone, a part that holds the key note and its fifth, the job a duda or a lira does in a village band. It sounds through the opening and the first half of the loop, measured in the MIDI at 100 percent of that span on every piece, and lifts off when the second half arrives. 5 of the dance and feast tracks add a dance drum in the second half.

What plays what. General MIDI has no tsymbaly, gusli, bayan, balalaika, domra, duda, lira, sopilka, kugikly or baraban, so their parts are played on the nearest General MIDI sounds: hammered dulcimer, harp, tango accordion, steel string guitar, nylon string guitar, reed organ, recorder, pan flute, whistle and taiko drum. Fiddle, clarinet, choir, bells and strings play under their own names. The Readme lists every one. If you own the real instruments as samples, load the MIDI into them.

What is in it. 38 full pieces and 6 short cues, 55:19 of music, 31 tracks in 4/4, 7 in 3/4 and 6 in 2/4. Dawn and the hearth: Zarya, Before the Cock Crows, The Izba Hearth and Morning Comes Again. The village by day: The Green and the Well, The Carved Shutters, Washday at the River, The Market Square, The Haggle, The Autumn Fair, The Bathhouse, The Potter's Stall and Children's Game Song. The fields and the work: The Smithy, The Water Mill, The Rye Fields, Harvest Song and The Last Sheaf. The church and the hall: The Wooden Church, Bells for the Feast Day, The Elder's Hall and The Elder's Word. The river and the woods: The River Bank, Rusalki at Dusk, The Forest Edge, The Birch Road, Berries in the Birchwood and The Forest at Night. The feasts: The Ring Dance, The Wedding Procession, Midsummer Bonfire, The Winter Carol and The Sleigh Road. Sorrow and the night: The Wake, A Lament by the Graves, The Night Watch, Rain on the Shingles and The Village Asleep. Cues: A Fair Bargain, The Cart Wheel Breaks, The Harvest Is In, Bread and Salt, Warm by the Stove and The Bells Ring Out.

What you get. 44 OGG files, 38 of them with sample accurate LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH tags, which is what RPG Maker MV and MZ read. 44 editable .mid sources. A Readme with per engine import notes, the proof reports, and a royalty free commercial licence.

One family of 5 cells. Zarya, Khorovod, Kolokol, Kuznya and Doroga. Zarya climbs a third and then two steps, through the raised fourth to the fifth; Khorovod is the seed danced and comes to rest on the raised fourth, for the ring dance, the market and the fair; Kolokol is the seed turned over, for the church, the river at dusk and the wake; Kuznya leaps straight to the raised fourth and strikes it again, for the smithy, the mill and the harvest; Doroga begins with two falling steps, for the road out. 1454 statements and fragments of those cells across the album, counted by the harness in the finished MIDI.

Gate results. 788 theory checks and 510 audio checks, 0 failed, and the reports ship inside the download. They say the music is correctly written, rendered and tagged. They are not a claim about taste, which is what the free tracks are for.

Three full tracks are free on this page, with their MIDI: Zarya, the title theme in Lydian, then The Ring Dance, in Ukrainian Dorian with the dance drum, and The Wooden Church, the song turned over.

An honest note on the style. This is a fantasy game score written in two modes and in the idiom of the village bands games associate with Slavic folklore. It is not a recording of traditional music and does not claim to be. No folk song and no liturgy is quoted; every tune was composed for this record. The renders are a General MIDI reference render through a conventional soundfont. The composition system is AI written code and no generative audio model is used anywhere.
