I remember my mum paying an exorbitant amount for library internet usage. It was something like £3 an hour, which back then was like £7 an hour. I racked up £12 playing yard invaders, which is one of those flash games which have not been paralleled in art or physics since.

What's your earliest memory?
I remember my first day at primary school, and I remember the smell of it. It's a heady, wooden, plasticine smell. I don't think that smell exists anywhere any more. I'm not sure how I would feel if I smelled it.

Have you ever had an experience you can't explain?
At the library I was shelving books and repeating the dewey decimal number I was looking for to myself, and I get down the end of the aisle and at the opposite end I've just come from, face up, square in the aisle, lands a book with a slap. It's got the same dewey decimal number as I was looking for…

Have you ever seen a UFO?
Yes. It was three lights close together in the sky, slowly rotating. Though after maybe thirty years I might have recognised it now as a Chinese lantern, which were rare in the UK at the time.
