Summary

  • The driver's clearText() is replaced by fill(text), which replaces the focused field's text in one step; '' clears it. This changes MobilewrightDriver in @mobilewright/protocol.
  • locator.fill(text) taps the field, then calls driver.fill(text). locator.clear() is fill(''), and still checks that the field ended up empty (Failed to clear element).
  • MobilecliDriver and MobileNextDriver both call mobilecli's new device.io.fill:
    • Android: mobilecli sets the text through accessibility (ACTION_SET_TEXT), with no keys.
    • iOS: mobilecli presses the HID clear key, then types, which is what mobilewright did before.
  • The mobilewright fill CLI command and the inspector's fill action call driver.fill(text) too, instead of clear then type.

Why

On Jetpack Compose text fields, fill and clear failed with Failed to clear element, 5 to 6 tests per Android conformance run:

  • The keys went out about 6ms after the tap, before the field had focus.
  • Even after focus, a Compose TextField moves its cursor to the tap point a moment later, which collapses the ctrl+a selection. The backspace then deletes one character, so glorpax@milliways.space became glorpax@milliways.spce.

Setting the text through accessibility avoids both. It's also how Appium's UiAutomator2 driver clears fields (UiObject2.clear() is setText("")).

Needs mobile-next/mobilecli#527 (device.io.fill).

Notes

  • Breaking for third-party drivers: MobilewrightDriver.clearText() is gone, and they need fill(text) instead.
  • fill no longer types key by key on Android. Playwright's fill also sets the value; an app that depends on keystrokes would need a pressSequentially() (not added here).

Test plan

  • npm run build, npm test (959 passed), npm run lint
  • Updated tests: locator fill / clear call driver.fill ('' for clear) without typing, the driver sends device.io.fill on iOS and Android, and the inspector fill route
  • Milliways conformance with mobilecli #527, fill / clear / value tests:
    • Android emulator: 16 of 16 passed (before: 5 to 6 failed)
    • iOS simulator: 15 of 16 passed. clearAppData resets the saved profile is flaky (fails then passes on a rerun) at the check after the app data reset, not in fill.

Walkthrough

The session interface replaces clearText() with fill(text). Both mobile drivers send the supplied text through device.io.fill. Locator clear and fill operations use a shared tap-and-fill path. The CLI and inspector also use fill(text) after tapping their targets. Empty text is used to clear a field, and the locator checks for residual text after an empty fill.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b186d

Text entry and clearing now use a single fill operation. That operation may not work with the bundled mobilecli version, and it can write to the wrong field if the tapped element has not yet gained focus. Upgrade the dependency and add focus confirmation before merging.

published build that includes the `device.io.clear` RPC, so the default
auto-start binary supports the call in `clearText()`.

- Line 269: Move deadline initialization before _resolveAndTap so it covers the
complete action, then pass only the remaining time to the focus wait. Ensure
clear() and fill() share this single timeout budget rather than receiving a
fresh timeout after tapping.
