I would like to see support for bidirectional rendering for Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew, including mixed English and numbers, correct joining and combining marks, and consistent cursor, selection, copying, and search behavior. This would help developers working with these languages use the terminal in more effective way. As the current implementation does not make it possible to render those languages at all.
Implementation Suggestion
I have a working prototype using bidi-js and Chromium shaping through xterm’s DOM renderer. It preserves logical text, includes Vitest tests, and initially targets the normal screen. I’d appreciate feedback on the approach and private xterm hooks before submitting a PR. Would this be something of interest to the project?
