If you've been paying attention, you know how much bullshit Microsoft and Google have been spewing about their proprietary vendor-locked products, calling them "sovereign" to appeal to the movement that was meant to free us from them.

Today I am at a conference organised by the only US tech company who I think actually have a point when they say their (SaaS!) product will make you more secure and more sovereign than alternatives.

Guesses and outrage are welcome!

I have to share with you what I'm up to tonight. I am not setting up OIDC in my homelab, despite telling everyone for months I would do that. Nor setting up a Discord-Matrix bridge.

I am doing something that I hope will be way less adventurous than any of that.

I run #renovatebot in my home cluster and at work. Combined with a GitOps tool like #fluxcd , this is my primary defense against "AI hacking".

It doesn't matter if a **vulnerability** was discovered with AI assistance or not: all that matters to you is how quickly the **patch** is applied.

I prefer my security patches automerged in the middle of the night after going through automated testing.

Turn off the view of your own webcam in your video call software.

I recently came across research from a few years ago that concluded you get much less tired of doing video calls if you "hide self-view". Having the little window where you see your own webcam feed is somehow very stressful for the brain.

So I disabled it and I have never felt as at ease doing video calls.
Highly recommend giving it a shot for a few days. You feel a bit vulnerable at first, but it quickly makes video calls feel so much more natural.

My Pride flag almost crashed into my heat pump

If I had a nickel for every time I wrote a blog whose reason for existence was invalidated within weeks of publication, I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Het huis waarin ik met mijn vrouw woon, is gebouwd als sociale huurwoning in de jaren '70.
Toen we het 2 jaar geleden kochten, wilden we het veel energie-efficiënter maken. Veel mensen zeiden dat dat niet kon.

Toch hebben we geïsoleerd en zonnepanelen en een volledig elektrische lucht-water warmtepomp genomen.

We hebben er precies een jaar geleden ook voor gekozen om een dynamisch energiecontract te nemen. Aangezien we allebei veel thuiswerken en de panelen op oost-west liggen, leek dat een goed idee. Meer gebruik midden op de dag, wanneer stroom goedkoop is, en meer opbrengst in de ochtend- en avondpiek dan een gemiddeld huis.

De balans? We hebben het de hele winter lekker warm gestookt op 21°C en de energierekening voor dit hele jaar komt uit op:
