A funder can hold a signed invoice for a shipment that was never loaded. A bill of lading is meant to prove otherwise, and it can be issued for cargo nobody has seen. Without the shipment, the funder is lending unsecured and does not know it.

Trades get queried months after settlement, by parties who were not there and cannot call anyone who was. A record that only holds up while someone can vouch for it is no use to them. What holds up is a history nobody could revise.
