Affirmations Bot

I've experimented with several social media bots over the years. The latest is Affirmations Bot and it sends out affirmations daily to Mastodon (RSS Feed) and Bluesky. I've collected many over the years from support groups, books, and some I've written myself.

ArtLung Lab

The Lab started as a part of this website. I post experiments in web programming there. Here are the latest.

Ever since I've had a web page I have tinkered with HTML. The Lab lab.artlung.com (RSS Feed) collects experiments and explainers I've made over the years. The source code for the site is available on GitHub: artlung/lab.artlung.com. When I learn something new or find some interesting oddity about the web, I will create a page for it on the lab. I left it fallow for many years but returned to it with a passion in 2024.

Bodysurfing

I love the water. I try to ride waves as daily as possible year round. Some weeks it's six sessions, and some weeks two.

I got angry in the water today. Not at any person. (Man vs Man) Not at the water. (Man vs. Nature) Not at myself. (Man vs. Self) And maybe it wasn’t anger. The surf is big right now. And the tide was high this morning. Big waves; large crashing wipeouts. I did a lot of paddling. And I got a few good rides. On one good ride, it ended–as they often do–with me underwater. I was under for rather longer than I wished to be under. That didn’t make me angry. I mostly felt puzzled. The currents weren’t really holding me down. What gave me a big angry-adjacent feeling was a REALIZATION. I have greater density. I have lost some weight. I am still plenty large. But my mass is denser. I have less adipose (fat) tissue. Fat tissue is lighter than water. I have been relying, for most of my life, on a kind of emergency water safety system based on being fat. And that system has changed. I’m still fat. I’m merely less fat. And so, I must adjust. I must be more mindful of other ways to get to the surface. I must add better cognizance of where the surface is. I need to be watching the light better. I can’t rely on the subtle upward flotation momentum that I previously got for free. Add to that that the roiling waters of of sea foam are themselves lighter. Foam in the sea comes from the same place as foam in a soda pop or a beer. It’s air. So the anger was at the unfairness. I remain technically obese, but I’m not obese enough to float easily in foamy surf. And I very much don’t want to spend excess time underwater. That excess time would be a synonym for DROWNING. In February In 15 Seconds, I wrote: And I will remember my limits and do my best to operate within them. So my limits have changed. I’m stronger in the water. I have better confidence, stamina, energy, musculature, but I have earned demerits in flotation. Funny enough I saw a sea lion in the water today. I was too late to snap a photo with my phone though. But I think of myself as closely related physically to marine mammals such as at the sea lion. And I always note their zaftig quality. tl;dr: the US Web Design System has been functionally taken over by DOGE or a DOGE-aligned group. Its code and community are now being run by AI, and its current form does not deserve the hard-earned trust USWDS built over its first 10 years.

Archaic HTML! Tilde Club! Neocities!

tilde.club/~artlung/ is "retro." It is a single page site. I assure that the code validates to the HTML 2.0 DOCTYPE. That means CLASS or ID attributes are not allowed. That deprecated 1990s version of HTML still allows for a readable, fairly attractive page. That code is available on GitHub: artlung/artlung-tilde-club .

artlung.neocities.org is another experiment. I think Neocities is terrific. It is approachable, friendly, and fun. My page there validates to HTML 4.01.

For Weird Web October 2025, I created a page which validates to ISO HTML/IEC 15445:2000 . That specification still works terrific and the exercise reminded me that good HTML is future-proof.
