Our Story

Murena’s story starts with Gaël Duval – a European entrepreneur and pioneer of Open Source and Linux. 



Gaël made his mark with Linux Mandrake back in 1998: the first Linux version suitable for mainstream use.



His vision is simple: privacy and open source software should be for everybody – not something reserved for people with advanced technical knowledge.



Almost three decades later, when Gaël realized how deeply our smartphones had become entangled in Big Tech’s surveillance-driven business models, he recognized the same problem: the few privacy-first options that existed were too technical, too incomplete – simply not accessible to the average person.


That’s why Murena exists: smartphones and tablets running /e/OS, a mobile operating system designed from the ground up to help people protect their privacy while simultaneously making sure that everyone can use the OS in a user-friendly way.
