Well, probably should do a self-promo post since it's been... half a year or so.

Hi, I'm D. Moonfire (https://d.moonfire.us/), I mostly write steampunk and fantasy. 97% of those words are free to read on my website, https://fedran.com/ with the index of stories at https://fedran.com/sources/. No Patreon, no subscriber, no fees (well, I have a Patreon, Librepay, and Ko-Fi, but you get nothing special for them, what you read is what you get). Really, the only payment I crave is to someone say they like it, ask questions about stories, or just let me know I touched their lives.

For a while I was belting out a chapter or story a week and did so for three hundred consecutive weeks (I'm proud of following cadences). I did burn out for a little but I'm getting back into it, but that is why "about" 907,205 words can be found on the site for your enjoyment. All of the stories can be read online, download in EPUB and PDF format. I even have an OPDS feed if you want to add my library to your ebook reader.

Most of my stories are "lightly edited" (I don't ask for money, I can't pay editors), but I do have a couple professionally polished ones on the main website.

For a fantasy world, I didn't want it to be all action or drama, so there are slices of life, forensic mages, people struggling with the trials of just being human with topics ranging from saving one's family from death to dealing with jealousy in an open marriage. There are also spicy stories, which are hopefully all properly tagged.

My stories are also overlapping. The story about a talented swinger being rescued by a middle-aged lesbian who can sharpen knives with a touch bumps against the story about a young violin player trying to avenge a murder which intersects with a story about a young man trying to take a trip across the country in his new fangled car.

If you have a topic you want, I'll be glad to tell you what I have or what might touch those topics. Some of them will get me to write it, but I just like to burble about the joy of world-building.

Today, I've done twelve code reviews and finished four PRs that were estimated by the team to take 150 hours. I did them in five, one of them while listening to our marketing team get excited about a website.

Well, lunch hour was driving to the county dump and a Target run because one of my quirks is that I don't deal well when my breakfast is available, it hits my food insecurity. So, I always had a backup supply of emergency oatmeal when I was eating that, but with fresh veggies, I don't have that.

"Lots of you have been asking me about the new website."

No, I have a serious difficult believing the development team is really excited about a new branding site.

I'm hoping to finish last month's writing obligation in the next day or so, which means I need to do a programming project. I'm thinking a choice of three of them and I'm doing it as a multiple choice, biggest one wins.

Leicmin: My patron aggregation site which lets me combine different vendors into a single list so I can generate a .htpasswd for my static site. I need to work on install story (something other than NixOS, probably docker-compose and/or Docker) and more work on login processes (maybe... emails and recovery passwords). Maybe audits. (https://src.mfgames.com/leicmin/leicmin)

MfGames Nitride: Someone asked about my C# static site generator. It has almost no useful documentation, so do I spent a week working on documenting what I already have? And probably some fixes here and there. (https://src.mfgames.com/mfgames-cil/mfgames-cil/)

MfGames Culture: My fantasy calendar program. I'm rewriting a ten year old version in TypeScript to be WASM with OCI Container support (through Podman) to handle represent my constructed calendars in their components, formatting the results into something pretty, and then parsing the pretty format back into it. This is mainly going to lead to me having a timeline on my website again. (https://src.mfgames.com/mfgames-culture/mfgames-culture-rs)

Multiple choice, check whatever interests you. Ties go to me, no answers will be probably Leicmin. Boosts are always welcome

#WritersCoffeeClub October 1:

What are you hoping to achieve this month?

Get a couple more chapters of Allegro through the writing group and maybe do another pass of editing.

And, if I have a chance, do some documenting. I usually write at least a paragraph about every character, novel, story, play, and epigraph in the book and add it to my wiki. It's a fair amount of work, but I like building up the secondary materials in the world.

Unfortunately for me, I think there are about sixty plays and songs referenced in Allegro. The problem of writing a fan-fiction of a music video and someone who primarily views the world through plays she's seen.

Yesterday, Partner painted one of the doors yellow on the house (we have a dark blue house but they love sunflowers). They asked me if they missed anything.

I pointed to the lower right panel.

Partner: "What did I miss?"

Me: "No idea, it's just wrong."

They got much closer and realized they had a lot of little speckles that were almost impossible to see from a few feet away and with my blurry vision. I didn't know that, I just knew that my head said there was something wrong with that section.

Nine Games that Influenced Me
Toggle visibility
  • Sentinel Worlds 1: Future Magic
    • First game where I could hack my ship's computer, the game added a whole new mechanic in the middle of the game, and I obsessed about the random number generator for character creation. (I also loved Hard Nova, which the team who wrote this produced later.)
  • The Bard's Tale
    • I love the grid movement and the character sheets. Played it for hours along with the other related ones (Wizardry, Might and Magic). Still trying to write one.
  • The Legend of Zelda
    • I love Link and Zelda and Ganon. They are my favorite polyam group (next to Mario, Peach, and Bowser). Also, no grinding.
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Curse of the Azure Bonds (well, all of gold box series)
    • One of the first games I learned to hack the save games.
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
    • Probably the smoothest metrovania I've ever played. A game that almost makes me cry and my hate for the non-violent environmental bosses.
  • Oblivion
    • Played this for hours. And the first game I played mods with (I like the boobies and more complex dungeons).
  • Metroid
    • First game I learned how to speed run.
  • Satisfactory
    • Over 2k hours playing with the kids.
  • Minecraft Dungeons
    • Another kid game where we can just play.
    • And apparently the new version that came out today doesn't run on Linux! :(

Senior Developer: There was an error. How do I fix it?

Me: Did you look at the error that tells you what file to edit and what the change should look like? It's right on the image you just pasted.

A little bit of spiraling this morning.

I did write 6k words last night so that felt pretty good. And, during those moments of me going "uh..." where I normally switch to the browser to doom scroll (which I get bored doing because I purposefully made my social feed not scroll friendly), I had a Leicmin coding session to work on switching it to use design tokens (I hate that word) using Style Dictionary and following the same palette as my Fedran, D. Moonfire, and MfGames sites, which also has a bonus of introducing light mode for those who don't live in a cave. (That was a long sentence.)

I'm thinking about working on Leicmin when I finish my writing obligations. Not entirely sure what to do, because I'm feeling a bit nihilistic about it, but I can easily see the CSS changes eating up a few more days and then maybe either work on an install story (you know, something besides use a NixOS flake import), documentation, or get email working while registrating accounts.

... I don't know. There is a lot of grit using the application and it is really in the "jump on one foot while chanting in Lojban while drawing symbols in the air" phase of getting it working.

I might also integrate it into fedran.com and just set it up so a free account can hide the naughty stories.
