Character Name: Link
Canon: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Canon Point: post-ending
Background: Zelda Wiki Page - only the events in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
Suitability: Link will have no problem engaging with the game's plot - he is quite literally destined to help nations out with deity-induced problems. He's basically handled situations like that twice already, and managed to find a happy ending for both kingdoms to boot. I imagine that the adults around him will raise an eyebrow over this precocious little boy getting involved, but probably won't mind once they see how good he can be with this stuff.
Although Link comes from a franchise meant to be friendly and welcoming to younger people, Majora's Mask has a creepy and foreboding tone and the story contains a lot of implicitly dark scenarios. Not only is he exactly the type of character to get involved in the game's plot, but it's IC for him not to shy away from the darker in-game events either.
Powers: For the most part, physically, Link is a regular young Hylian boy. He doesn't really have powers so much as he has a wide range of skills that are pretty unusual for a kid his age. He is proficient with a variety of weapons, including sword and shield, bow, boomerang, explosives, and slingshot. He is also experienced with handling and riding horses, fishing, doing a lot of physical activity on very little sleep/food, and other outdoorsy/survivalist skills.
Link can use magic in the sense that he has the physical and mental capacity to use it. However, he doesn't really know anything about magic itself or magic spells. He doesn't know how to create a spell on his own or use magic to do things he can't otherwise do normally. Any magic abilities he has or spells he knows were taught/given to him by others. Since he loses his magic abilities between games, I'm find saying that he wouldn't be able to use any magic in Abraxas unless someone teaches him specific spells.
Finally, the only other "power" I can think of is that he has the Triforce of Courage embedded in his body and the games imply that this does... something, although it's not really clear what. It may be the source of Link's endurance, tenacity and enormous amount of courage in the face of dangerous situations.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
The most impactful event in Link's life was, hands down, being sealed away in the Sacred Realm. Not only had this happened as a direct result of own actions, when he failed to keep Ganondorf from getting the Triforce, but he was unable to do anything to stop him for seven years as a result. When Link awoke, he was still mentally a child, but now he had the body of a young adult and a grievous amount of responsibility and guilt to deal with. He did mature to some degree while living as an adult, but he still missed out on the rest of his childhood.
Princess Zelda tried to send him back in time to allow him to regain those lost years, but when Link returned to the age he should have been, he wasn't the same little kid anymore either. Instead, he found himself to be incredibly lonely. He could not relate to the Kokiri anymore, and Hylians now seemed unusually carefree and privileged in comparison to the warn-torn country he'd come back from. Nobody remembered what he had been through - in this new timeline, none of it had happened or would happen in the first place.
Despite Zelda's best intentions, it was impossible for Link to return to what his life was like before. He'd been through an ordeal that would be a lot for an adult to handle, much less a child. And instead of kicking back and relaxing and being a kid again, his first task when he returned to the past was to warn the King about Ganondorf's plan, essentially continuing the fight he'd already won in the future.
This is what motivates him to leave Hyrule and end up in Termina for the events in Majora's Mask. He leaves Hyrule in search of Navi, the one friend who could understand him, and instead gets mixed up in a new conflict where he was forced to repeat the same three days over and over. This task only forced Link to become even more self-reliant and secluded from others. Making friends was basically impossible when he'd have to constantly rewind, erasing everything he had done. He came to know everyone around him, but nobody knew him in return. This enforced his sense of duty to others and needing to take care of everyone without thanks, almost like an unseen parent.
As a result of all this time hopping, and then his own time-looping during the events of Majora's Mask, Link is a child "out of time," but in the Lovecraftian meaning of the phrase. Time has had a warped effect on him. He appears to be very young, but his mental age is much older than that - but only in some ways, as it's made him stunted in others. This is one of the biggest defining features of his perspective and personality post-Majora's Mask, and it wouldn't be there had he not been sealed away for seven years to begin with.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Link is close to being your typical Lawful Good character, always willing to stick his neck out for others and put himself on the line simply because it's the right thing to do. He is resilient and selfless, and while ostracization has been a constant in his life, it did not hurt him as acutely as it would for someone with more sensitive feelings. Link is eager to make friends and he will readily agree to help others with their problems, often without taking a moment to think about whether it is something he can handle. His belief in the goodness of others makes him willing to trust strangers, but after his lengthy adventures it's not without the knowledge that they could be bad people. Rather, Link simply isn't afraid of what could happen to him if a stranger did turn out to be a bad egg. He'd just deal with it.
This isn't just a character trait, but also a result of Link's acceptance and internalization of his status as the Hero of Time. Link doesn't question the Goddesses' chosen role for him or harbor any resentment, even when it's affected his life negatively. It was easy for him to accept the duty hoisted onto him by his destiny because he truly wanted to help and was unafraid to put himself in danger to do so. This is an essential personality trait to have as the Hero, because it allows him to be brave in the face of danger even when it would otherwise be foolish.
The one slight permutation to his highly Lawful Good leanings is that he's come to prioritize practicality and pragmatic solutions, especially after being trapped in a time loop where few decisions had any lasting effect. He is an experienced adventurer and monster-hunter, and after everything he's been through, he prefers to take the most effective and logical action first. If a bad guy needs to die, then he needs to die; Link doesn't stay up at night wondering if killing them was the right thing to do. On the flip side, his decisions have the potential to ruffle the feathers of people with more patience to consider other solutions. This makes him appear clueless at times, to the point of possibly being insensitive, while also making him tend towards being overly self-reliant and unnecessarily self-sacrificial.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Link doesn't have any close friends, aside from the one friend he's spent the last few years unsuccessfully searching for. He's kind of stunted when it comes to relationships, so if you were to ask him this question directly, he probably wouldn't have a very insightful answer to give you. But, Link tends to value trustworthiness and passion, especially if it's connected to commitment to a cause. These are qualities he'll find it easy to relate to, once he has a chance to form some lasting relationships.
He also admires - and maybe envies - people who live their lives simply and count their blessings, which are things he can't relate to but really wishes he could. Whatever regrets Link has about his station in life are connected to the loss of his old life, living in harmony with the forest and the Kokiri. Finally, because he was raised in the forest by forest spirits, Link has a deep respect for nature and the unseen forces behind it. He'll automatically have a connection to anyone who venerates or appreciates nature the same way.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Quite a lot, and most of it having to do with being unable to forgive himself for the mistakes he's made in the past. He looks back on his earliest adventures, before he was sealed away, as very "cringey" for lack of a better word - the same way an older teen would be embarrassed by their younger self, if their younger self was tasked with saving the world and then did a really terrible job. Link was a little kid at the time (an actual little kid), with no idea what he was dealing with or the risks involved, but despite this he doesn't go easy on himself for the mistakes he made.
Link is also aware of both the weird, cast-out-of-time aspects of his personality and the fact that his people skills could use some improving. He's working on these things, but hasn't had much of a chance to really improve them yet.
What is their sign, and why?
I struggled with this because several work for him, but I think I will go with Hanged Man, as it fits the most prominent aspects of Link's character. He's lived on the edges of society in some way or another for almost his entire life, whether it be in the Lost Woods where no other Hylian could step, or as a one-man resistance force to a tyrannical ruler, or as a time-looper. Also, he could definitely be described as "ahead of his time" within his universe, after all the effects time travel had on him.
